In the restaurant of my uncle, the fattest man in Switzerland, there were marble-topped tables with a tangle of petrified shapes on them. It was possible to extract human grotesques from this labyrinth and set them them down in pencil. This obsessed me, my 'bent for the bizarre' was showing itself.
