gekitsu In reply to CooleManTheMaster [2012-07-12 02:32:08 +0000 UTC]

aww, im flattered!

really, i dont have that much skill. if you sit down and draw, youll be there in no time. the most important thing is that you dont cheat yourself when practising. and thats easier said than done. (i do it all the time) in short, id say it boils down to: whenever you are laying down a mark that is not making a definitive statement, erase it, think about what this very line should depict (that includes a few levels: perspective & knowledge of forms [i.e. anatomy for people and animals], but also the two-dimensional aspect of picturemaking: silhouette, shape, rhythm etcetera, and in figure cases the expressiveness of gesture), and make a deliberate line.

the less your form of practise allows you to wiggle around and make wishy-washy statements, the more it forces you to know what you are doing. for example, if you want to practise your shading, go for it and use a hard-edged brush, black and white only. no grey. shading is deciding what is hit by light and what is not. ergo two values. if you get the placement of those right, you cant fuck it up if you wanted to. all in all: get the big things down right, and dont let them be overwhelmed by detail. works every time.

also, dont be intimidated by reference! dont try to copy what you see, but make a drawing/painting that looks like what you see. leave out what is unnecessary, simplify what is complex, make random things have a rhythm, push shapes so they really have the impact they have in your head... you cant observe design into a picture! you have to put it there!
dont be afraid to make a conscious copy of a drawing you like. try duplicating it line by line, noticing how you would have done some lines differently, and observe what those new marks do. whenever i copy, say, an iain mccaig or mike mignola drawing, i am astounded how gutsy they are, simplifying things down into simple shapes, but play those off each other so they really hit home.

look here for example: [link] - damn, look at those horse legs! look how much he exaggerated the knobbyness of the joints! look how he plays off long, sweeping curves against shorter, choppy lines - curves against straights, inward-curving against outward-bulging! that stuff looks alive!

other greats worth studying are all the old disney animators, especially milt kahl! their drawings have to be simple so they can be animated, and they also have to read well in a multitude of situations. andreas dejas blog [link] and hans bachers blog [link] are treasure troves of animation-related stuff.

just look at lots of great drawings, dissect them in your mind, and do a lot of drawings, always pushing you to solve new problems. thats really all there is to it, and the journey never ends.

Thank you for your great advice. People like you that take the time to help others and write out a thoughtful reply make me smile. = ) The difficult part for me is making definitive lines, as my "mind's eye" isn't very good, as well as just sitting down and doing studies. I know I am capable of good work, I just need to sit down and study diligently. Then, everything else will fall into place. It's very hard for me to combat my laziness though, haha, but I try to and succeed sometimes. = ) Hopefully things begin to fall into place for me, and understanding will come easier to me, so I can learn and do more in an amount of time that is shorter than what I take now. = )

gekitsu In reply to CooleManTheMaster [2012-07-12 14:07:23 +0000 UTC]

i know that laziness problem first hand.

as for the minds eye: the ability to do imagine a line that does several things at once really only comes when you got used to some of those tasks. like perspective, for example: in the beginning, you learn a method for constructing geometry in perspective. but the more you use that technique, the more familiar you will become with its results, and the less elaborate of a setup you will need to predict the look of the outcome. at one point, youll just draw stuff that looks right enough without any construction at all. from there on, it will be much easier to imagine a line that sells the perspective and, say, tries improving the readability of the silhouette.

also, there is nothing wrong with making helping lines. like, working out rough perspective and anatomy first, so you know what ends up where on the page, and then make those rough marks into something that also looks good. thats as "valid" a process as any other. no-one is going to chide you for your process when it delivers good results.

So it all boils down to constant practice, like everyone always says. = P Thank you for your responses, I appreciate them. = )

no problem

from one lazy bum to another: looking at great drawings helps, too, as long as you really look for the draughtsmans work, and not just how hot the girl in the drawing is.
