The best advice I can give you is to try and demo all the render engines that you can use with Sketchup. That way you can figure out which one suits you best - everyone is different and what is right for others might not be right for you (I simply couldn't get my head around V-Ray).
Once you have settled on a render engine, join a suitable forum and don't be afraid to ask questions or ask for advice by posting WIP renders.
If you don't know much about photography, I would suggest that now is a good time to learn. Understanding focal length and exposures etc. will help you reproduce the results you get when using a camera.
It is also very helpful to accumulate a library of very high quality materials and HDRIs.
I hope that helps.
