Yes it was confirmed by John Lasseter. He said in a Cars 2 interview that Mater is an idiot savant when it comes to minute details of what he's interested in. Idiot savant is an old term for autistic savant. Asperger's are autistic savants. Actually it says several places online that Mater has this vast encyclopedic savant like knowledge on a lot of things that take an interest to him. People with Asperger's syndrome have a vast encyclopedic savant like knowledge that take and interest to them too. The driving backwards thing is only a skill that a genius autistic savant can do. He also has sensory input issues. He likes to talk a lot, loud and fast and is socially inept a lot. All symptoms of having autism.
