FluffBucket In reply to matthais [2004-06-11 06:32:53 +0000 UTC]

I will win this conversation battle......I saved my email and copied and pasted it....so here we go...

Sorry about the problems, It kept submitting it before I finished relpying. Is let me start this from the beginning, some of this you might have already read.

In our last chat you wrote...
"state divides money into this regions, cos every region knows best where to invest the money..."
:::This is much like how our state government works. They are given money to use as they see fit. The only difference that I can see is that our states, (your regions) are able to have different laws, as they see fit. (only they must not conflict with the laws of the country) Your regions are not given the ability to make laws, is that correct?:::

Example: if you go to a grocery store or convience store in vegas they actually have a section with slot machines to play!
:::I had talked about this in our last chat, but I misspelled the word convenience. A convenience store is a smaller version of a grocery store. It is like the name says, it is supposed to be more convenient. (So sorry about the typo):::

"yes, you're right. Truly, I cannot also say that I know every corner in our city as it is quite large ( and you have to visit Košice sometime!)"
:::I would love, love, to visit Kosice someday! I have always wanted to go there and learn to speak Slovak. My great grandparents only spoke Slovak when they came to this country, and learned to speak English. But now none in my family can speak or even understand Slovak.:::

"smaller country, bigger concentration (we have around 6.000.000 people, you e.g.100.000.000???)... (i don't want to write 6 millions in previous sentence, cos i heard that "million" means other number in us english, here 6 million means number 6.000.000! in your case it is billion i think...?"
:::Actually, that is how you write 6 million...6,000,000 but maybe because of the foreign exchange rate 6 million is like 6 billion, but that is how we right 6million.:::

"in prev. chat i used "kiss", and i had troubles from that as i wrote... for this time i had opened emoticon legend to be strict..."
:::That is what I do too! But I think they help explain sarcasm or teasing. (plus they are cute):::

“I actually live in LV...(LA stands for Los Angeles in California)
-Shorthand LA is known here, LV we never use, maybe shorthand "Vegas"”
:::Yup, LV is the abbreviation for las Vegas, it is the abbreviation we use when sending mail.:::

“I live in Henderson which is a city on the outskirts of las vegas:::::
- is there an empty place between LV and Henderson cities or are they divided just by table by the road? Hi there in Henderson!”
:::No it is definitely not empty between the two cities. What they do is just determine a road that is the cut off for Henderson and the beginning of Las Vegas. Divided by a table in the road, is that some Slovakian humor I hear?:::

“we actually live in the Nevada desert. Las Vegas, Henderson, Summerlin are all cities located in the desert. So just behind my apartment are desert, mountains, coyotes::::
- this could be interesting! Esp. the coyotes (aren't people afraid of them?). So, you want to tell me that now as you are reading this, the outlook from your window is straight to hills on desert (and i can hear also some coyotes singing? ) strange thought...!”
:::This is true. If I look off my balcony I see Mountains. I am very close to them, some people might see desert, and others, other houses. But our desert is not like hills or even sandy desert. It is bushes that dry up and become tumbleweed, rocky and has snakes and some cactus. (not many things can survive in the desert.) But yes the other night I was out taking pic's and heard coyotes, and yes we don't like them. The best way to describe las Vegas is a massive desert surrounded by mountains, with the thriving city of Las Vegas in the Middle.:::

“(didn't you wanted to write "due" except of "do"??). how large is the desert? (can man walk through it by feet?)”
::yes sorry about the typo hope I am not confusing you too much) No the desert is massive, but it is all over. We live in the middle of it so if you walk around you will eventually walk along or through the desert. (it is along side the roads or behind houses):::

“today we were in the 90's with the high at 104. It can get up to 115 or more during the summer (but our average in summer is about 105.) It is very dry with little humidity and very little trees. No forests”:

"sorry, but I absolutely cannot understand this sentence: "today we were in the 90's with the high at 104"... "
:::I was referring to the weather as 90 degrees F (Fahrenheit) with it reaching 104 F at the highest. 104 F is 40 C (Celsius) is you can get and idea of how hot that is, if you ever want to convert our weather to yours just minus 32 and divide by 1.8. ( 104-32/1.8):::

“Here is another example of usa and europe difference. You're measuring temperature in Kelvins? and we in grads of Celsius (so i can't imagine how hot is 105!) i suppose it's around 35 grads of Celsius. Also you are using gallons and we liters (1 liter is around 4 comma something liters), for measuring distance we use metrics system and u r using inch system.”
:::I forgot about that! Stubborn American school system won’t switch to the system the rest of the world uses.:::

Now I’m sitting at work, I work in construction firm, they're making 3D models of cranes & planes, we're cooperating with American firm and my colleagues are going nuts when they have to reckon the inches to millimeters, centimeters... there's 60 constructers here, they have mechanical drawings on paper and they are re-drawing them into some 3D programs and then it goes straight to manufacture. What I wanted to say with this, is that 60 people are doing the same job, but I'm employed here as a standalone graphic designer to present their products... so I have internet on my Mac, sometimes not too much work and I can chat with ya . My colleagues do not have net, as they were tend to download lots of unnecessary thingies and funs, so management decided to un-connect them from net. But as I am gr. designer, web developer and pre-press designer, they cannot take me off the net as i usually need to learn much of new technologies and test my pages...”
:::you are lucky, but aren’t your colleagues jealous that you get to chat with an American chic while they are working? Heehee:::

“btw. r u using Mac or PC? And what are the trends there, to have PC or Mac?”
:::most everyone here uses pc as well. As far as computer trend go… surround sound, dvd player’s, dvd burners, etc. I am not much of a computer geek, but I know people can get real into there computers.:::

“in north of slovakia there are mountains Tatras (divided into High and Low Tatras), they're quite high and large, we can profit on tourism out of them, but our management is a lazy bitch, we do not know how to make money out of it..., but on the other side it would not be good to get Tatras dirty from tourists and to have casinos and hot-dog stands on every corner...”
:::heehee most Slovakian humor I see. Hotdog stands, your silly! Well, it is try we tend to make a profit off anything we can, but I am surprised that you are not getting more tourists for just the skiing alone.:::

“So, back to snow... our climate here is changing throughout year - we have 4 seasons - spring, summer, autumn, winter (it could be interesting for ya, isn't it?) avg. temperatures in this seasons: 15,27,15,0 grads of Celsius.”
:::ha, we have the same four seasons only your 15,27,15,0 celsius (59,80,59,32 F) here our spring is 80, summer 103, autumn maybe 75, winter maybe 55.
(27,40,24,18 Celsis)That is in town, but in the mountains, much cooler of course.

“I am skiing sometime (did you ever ski? sorry if i'm asking for ya stupid things?), but it's quite an expensive sport (outfit, ski tows that brings you up to hill). snowboard - i didn't tried it yet... (but wanna to try )”
:::I am just the opposite I snowboard but have never tried skiing. I am okay at snowboarding and want to get better at it before I try skiing, although the more bruised up I get from it, the more I might give into skiing.

“thankfullness is on my side (can you understand this sentance? cos i told it in slovak way and just translated words to en, here you can see example of different meaning of words in whole, meaningful sentece)”
:::I think I can understand what that means, that you are the one that is thankful. Is that right? Although, after how long you had to wait for this response I am not so sure you are thankful anymore.:::

“No, it's like "a" in word "father". a is just a. or like in word "mother", although here you're changing "o" to "a". Your lang is special on changing characters, it's the basic difficulty of your lang for us, also it's very hard to learn conjugation (as in school they told us that EN has 16 conjugations (understood me? :ew?)”
:::English can be very difficult esp. because in different parts of usa people have accents so they will pronounce words differently. Example: we say Nevada with the first “a” like the “a” as in apple and the last “a” like the word “duh”,( nev-a-duh ) but if you were in California they pronounce Nevada with the first “a” like the “a” in father (long “o” sound, like when your at the doctor and you say “ahhh”.) (nev-o-duh) see the difference? Did I explain that okay?:::
:::By “EN” I’m assuming you mean English, right? Yes we use conjunctions all the time. It becomes so natural (for, and, but, or, yet, so, after, since, while, although, even if, because, both, either, neither, not only… wow I guess there are 16!). These are all used for the same reason. Mostly when we are talking and are not finished with our thought, but want to continue the sentence, is when we use conjunctions.:::

“And if the accent is over the "a" in ako sa mas is the a pronounced like "ej" as in the word same?- if i caught your meaning well, no. ako sa mas is pronounced ako sa mas... We aren't tending to effigy (change) the pronouncing of letters, only in some cases. E.g. letter "a" in EN can be told in more ways: in "father" is "a" pronounced as "a". in "cat" "a" becomes "e", in "awful" "a" becames "o" or "ou", in "the same" "a" becomes "ej"... Did you ever realised this things?”
:::yes, that is why I asked you how the “a” was pronounced in “ako sa mas” to English words so I could pronounce it properly. So you mean to tell me that the “a” in “ako sa mas” is pronounced the same all the way through the sentence? WOW, what a concept! Heehee… but to correct you… when we say “father” and “awful” the “a” becomes “o” or “ou” in both, when we say “cat” and “apple” the “a” is pronounced the same like “ahhh”(like as if you were screaming ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh). Get it? And yes the word “same” has an “ej” sound. This is so confusing, because in proper English pronunciation this might be wrong, but if you were talking to someone that is how we would say them.:::

“"the" isn't in any other lang. just in english (as i know...) it looks kinda stupid for us, because its needless word, hasn't any meaning!. and can u explain me diff. between using "a" and "the"??? (teacher tried to explain it to us, but i'm not sure if i've understood it well...)”
:::man, we really do make it hard to learn our language don’t we. lol. You must have been so confused. . okay let’s see if I can explain A and The… you probably know A and An are like the same word only we use an if the word following it begins the a vowel. Example: An Apple fell from the tree. It is difficult to explain, but you could also say… The apple fell from a tree. The difference is the context of the sentence…if we were standing next to the apple and you said, “how did this apple get here?” I would say… “The apple fell from a tree.” Because we are referring to a specific apple (the one in front of us, not just any apple, which would be an apple. Get it? So if we were standing under the tree staring at the apple. I would say, “The apple fell from the tree” so you would understand that this specific apple came from this specific tree. Did I help explain it better or confuse you worse?:::

In your deviant art you said your age is 25, right? So you must have gone to college to do the kind of work you do, right?
Okay now to bombard you with more questions….
What are relationships like there? Do people date a lot just the two of them or is it more like a group date? (Your friends meeting up with her friends?)
Do people practice conservatism when dated or in there daily lives? I know in different countries it can be as different as night and day. Example: In Sweden nudity is natural esp. on the beach. They are very comfortably with their body’s I believe. (not to say they walk around nude all the time.)
When would you consider a guy or a girl promiscuous? Here it is more acceptable for a man to be promiscuous that a woman.
What is the average age when people get married there? I know here it is typically, for women, in there 20’s.

I really enjoy our conversations, and am so interested in learning that I would love to talk on the phone with you one day, if you are comfortable with that. I think it would help us both understand each other’s pronunciation of words better. But if you are uncomfortable with that, I am not pushy, and totally understand.
