Given that a couple of guys on War Relics doubt it was a factory-made thing, I wondered what you would make of it.

I'd say it's likely a field-made thing, as far as I know of they never issued a helmet cover, it appears to be made of amoeba pattern, most likely cut from camouflage fabric such as a Amoeba camo suits: broneboy.ru/wp-content/uploads… - I have even seen images of Germans using the pattern on their helmets also, most likely from captured stock, this famous Stalingrad photo for instance: alexanderandsonsrestorations.c… . My guess is it's made in the field, the same way Germans would cut white cloth to use for camouflage in Stalingrad or even the famous photo of an American soldier in the Ardennes using a white laced tablecoth as a helmet cover: s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/5…
