A very interesting series of photos you just posted. What and where are all those photos of various "houses" with shiny and interesting, dark, shadowed interiors?

They were part of the Melbourne Open House Day 2009 . It was a fantastic day, and didn't manage to end up visiting all of the locations, but I am seriously looking forward to next year!

So it is a tour of Historic Melbourne, all in a connected, adjacent area? But what are the buildings called "houses?" What were they/are they for. What is/was their purpose, these buildings?

Kevinreader In reply to mertonparrish [2009-07-25 14:18:56 +0000 UTC]
They were just random buildings that were either of a historical nature (as in the first one built over a certain height) or like the substation (the last to supply DC electrical power to parts of Nelbourne) or were wanting to be renovated but keep the historical nature or were simply darn cool(101 Collins street)!
The main website for Melbourne Open House (as in an open house for real estate agents where you can come in and view the insides of a house) is here for more detailed explanation.

Hmmm... did some more clicking... I see now how to read about each building... guess I just do not understand why some are called "houses." (Like Orin House or Denmark House, for example.) Everything from a brand new building, to a 1950s chrome and glass skyscraper, to a Victorian brick and mortar building has been given the name "house." on the list of the buildings in the tour. All so different in size shape, age and purpose. Seems odd.
House sounds to me like a residence building on a tree filled campus, a place where people in need might go for shelter, or a large private residence. But these seem to be large public buildings.
I guess house must just be a term like "building"... very generic, and attached to the proper name of the structure, no matter the purpose of the building... Maybe this is unique to Australia, or other places outside the USA which I am unaware of. Perhaps I am showing my ignorance. Just struck me as unusual and made me question.

Unfortunately, being from South Africa originally myself... I'm not entirely sure if this is an Australian quirk or whether it could be a matter of the Architects that they employed or merely a habit of the time period?
I know that some of the older buildings have been renovated and given a modern edge, but perhaps they kept the original name? I'm always of the mind that it is better to ask questions and to get knowledge than to keep quiet and remain ignorant. ... so feel free to ask anything.

Fascinating Aradale photos.
Why are abandoned institutions so interesting and compelling? Is it that we are all, underneath, afraid of ending up there? Is it the loss of freedom and unhappiness of the souls there? Is it the ghosts that we imagine must roam the empty rooms? All of the above?
I often think about what places I might roam if I were a ghost. Not sure why. Old empty buildings scare and yet fascinate me.
That is very human I suppose.
Enjoyed your photo series.
Watching you...
-Merton
