Oh, interesting!Β Maybe I will.Β Do you have tutorials on inking on there?Β I want to become better at inking my drawings.Β Β

While lots of my videos show me inking, I generally don't do tutorials. Most of my stuff is more general art or writing or D&D advice. Some are reading short stories while I draw.
I will be doing real-time inking videos for Inktober where I talk about what I'm doing and anything else I can think of, but since they'll be off the cuff, I'm not entirely sure what the content will be like.
It's funny you say that, though, because I don't know if I know any channels that do in-depth inking tutorials. As far as books, go, my faves are Guptill's "Rendering in Pen and Ink" and Nice's "Drawing in Pen and Ink (First Steps Series)"
How to Draw Manga Pen and Tone Technique and More How to Draw Manga Penning Characters are pretty good, too.

RE: Mythiril being banned
Users don't necessarily have the right to challenge a ban. The protections of the US Constitution do not necessarily apply to a Syrian national living in Syria. Here's my source on that: constitutioncenter.org/blog/coβ¦
"The main opinion said that constitutional rights do not apply outside the country to an individual who had no voluntary links to the United States."
As for not telling him how to use his voice, I'm going to do what I think is right, which is encouraging him to take his business elsewhere to discourage discriminatory business practices. Isn't you commanding me use my voice a certain way a little hypocritical? Don't see any irony whatsoever?
PS If I was banned, I would go to artstation. Or instagram. Or any of the other platforms. No worries.

True, point taken.Β However I (and many other users) are of the opinion that DA has always been cosmopolitan and reflected American values.Β I feel that DA should still reflect this and strive when possible to be inclusive.Β
Him taking his business elsewhere might help him financially, yes (except that Syrian banks actually don't allow foreign transactions, so no.Β He has not, in the first place, made actual money off of deviantart.Β I think you see that as the main issue because of my original post, but I've been informed that the main issue here is being geo-banned suddenly, without warning, while he hasn't been banned from any other american-based site.)Β But it doesn't excuse the non-transparent actions of DA in regard to its Syrian/Middle Eastern users.Β This change in policy doesn't reflect the global image that DA tries to present itself with, and it feels very discriminatory because of the timing of the geobannings, politics behind DA changing ownership, and the lack of announcement. It could, controversely, affect DA's reputation, too.Β So I'm glad he brought it to light.Β
Do you have a problem with Mythiril challenging a geoban?Β especially when he has found evidence that the ban does not need to be in place?

I don't have a problem with him challenging a ban, per se, I just think that it's more effective to take your business somewhere else if you don't want to support bad business practice. Businesses are a lot like sociopaths in that their only realistic goal is making money, and any semblance of humanity, fairness or kindness are typically a function of the business trying to avoid driving away customers by appearing heartless and robotic. Because of this, appealing to the emotional nature of people is not the most direct way of influencing a business, since the only language they truly understand on every level is money and losing money. Humans might run corporations on some level, but practically, the fiscal needs of a business dictate its behavior much more than the feelings or desires of the people who run it.
He may have never made money on dA, but rest assured that dA profits off of the traffic he creates, the revenue from core memberships, etc. When a company like dA reacts to an emotional backlash like they've gotten from doing this recent geoban, I would always bank on the fact that they reacted in order to minimize bad PR and thus lost revenue, rather than actually understanding the nature of their mistake or learning anything. Rather than being forced to band together every single time a business violates social rules, if everyone applies the concept of "voting with their wallet" it creates an environment where it's nearly impossible for businesses to discriminate; because xenophobia is vastly unpopular and socially undesirable, anyone engaging in it will lose customers so quickly that any business contemplating such a move will probably think twice, as bankruptcy is a much scarier prospect to them than a few thousand angry people's signatures on a petition (especially if those thousands of people aren't considering cutting ties with them).

I agree that sometimes voting with your wallet works, but that its not always effective, because sometimes a userbase (or shopper base) is too big for everyone to follow through.Β Also, I agree that bad PR will make a business change its mind quickly and effectively.Β However, I don't think that appealing to people's emotional senses and values in this case was ineffective.Β I feel many people are defending Mithiyril because they believe that DA should reflect the cosmopolitan values of its userbase, and they believe that DA is an open, global space in which to share art--because it has a long history of being so, with or without its corporate members expressing themselves and their values.Β The only time i remember DA's team expressing their values and setting the tone of the website was when certain moderators and DA as a whole got accused of being homophobic. Public outcry and discussion got their attention at that time, and I also feel it got their attention this time: Mythiril was able to get the attention of a moderator, present facts as to why he shouldn't be banned, and was allowed to use his voice to gather people's support.Β The fear that people will leave DA or give them bad PR, wether they are premium, commission-using members or not, is definitely a huge factor here, but not, in this case, I feel, the only one. Β Β I think its effectiveness has less to do with how much money DA will lose, and more about bad PR.Β But I also feel that human emotions and desire for connection are part of the equation, too.Β

I see irony in you telling him exactly what DA wants its Syrian users to do: leave and not have access to the site, as an "effective" form of "protest".

Do you realize that users leaving their site makes them lose money? Why do you think a business would want that?
