Ya I mean I used to doodle every now and then but I didn't start improving until I sat down like three years ago. Even then though I wasn't too serious about drawing until like last year when I met some of my art friends and started to draw almost daily.
Also you're art is absolutely amazing so I mean for ten years you've developed an amazing style and it's awesome!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

leafturtle In reply to Saltbae [2016-05-24 05:28:44 +0000 UTC]

I never really doodled XD But I was a lot younger when I started and didn't really think about my art in the long run - besides it was only 3 years ago that I even decided to start drawing humans DX You can imagine what they looked like though gosh DX NOODLE ARMS!! I'm actually impressed you draw hands XD I put that off for a LONNNGGGG time I hated it DX DX

Wow!! It's good to draw often I remember some of my friends used to think if I taught them how to draw hey would magically be at my skill level in a day or something and I was like uh no you need to draw all of the time and it has taken me a long time to reach this point most of them gave up petty quick which is disappointing >.>

Wow, I'm really flattered thank you so so much!! You're really really nice!!! I can't wait to see your art develop, I'm sure you'll be such an amazing artist!! I mean who am I kidding you already draw so well!! X3 I really can't wait to see more

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Saltbae In reply to leafturtle [2016-05-24 06:23:05 +0000 UTC]

Ah doodling was something I have been very fond of doing during class ever since maybe some kid in fifth grade taught me how to draw a kinda butchered body shape. Like I would just doodle on my paper but normally it was flowers or something and occasionally I'd do humans. Also hands are the bane of my existence so lately with my character designs I've been drawing them with little nubbies however I have this giant like 6,000 by 6,000 canvas on my computer with so many layers of just hands since i keep practicing them and ah they're horrible but I try.

And tell me about it. A lot of my friends from my school have asked for tutorials on how I do things and jus today my friend was like "How do you draw so well, my art looks like poop." and I kinda looked at her like "You draw like once in a blue moon and that's on your homework assignments, you need to draw everyday." and she kinda just rolled her eyes. Which is why I tend to stick to talking about art with friends I meet on DA because those people be trying to develop their art style.

Another thing with the art style is ahhhh they're hard to develop properly. Since I may or may not have hurt my wrists from drawing too much though I have a couple days where I can't draw so I think I'm just going to watch tutorials and how other people draw things and see if I can pick any new techniques up. Like I really need to start drawing anatomy properly XD. I'm so happy you want to see my art style grow though I went through your gallery and wow just you've always drawn nice but seeing it get better is epic!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

leafturtle In reply to Saltbae [2016-05-24 07:02:58 +0000 UTC]

Well it's really good of you to keep trying because if you shy away (like I did for a long time) You find that you won't learn a thing As much as it sucks over time I've found arms and legs and hands I actually am quite fond of drawing, even though they were difficult to begin with DX One tip I learned too is to look at your own body and move around a bit - it helps to develop your knowledge of where bones are and how they work ^^

Urgh that really sucks, if it's an instrument people really understand the trouble and how much you have to practice to get better but as soon as it's art they think you can learn how to do it at the drop of a hat it's RIDICULOUS!! It takes just as much passion, drive, practice and STUDYING as anything else!! The idea of studying things originally frustrated me but man does it help with the realism in your art, I know I still haveΒ a way to go with it but it really is important! But for some reason no one understands >.>

They really really are!! Ahh honestly I swear you're taking the words out of my mouth! It's so nice to find an artist so aware of what they need to do to get better!! I'm really impressed and quite frankly also relieved that there are people like you out there! And I know that feeling XD Drawing until your fingers or wrist hurt is such a common thing for me XD And in that healing time you look at tutorials!! YES!! Wow you're really onto it!!

I really really am excited!! That's probably why I follow so many up and coming artists - it's just so eye opening to see improvements and I think it helps me to improve too! I definitely still have a way to go, my anatomy is alright and I know the basics for sure but I need to work on muscles I think and working on the details like spine placement/shape and such. One thing I wish I had known when I was trying to develop my style is how important drawing realistically first helps to improve a cartoon style so much faster; it's amazing how much it helped me to improve! I look forward to improving my art too! but I'm also glad that I can draw what's on my mind without getting frustrated that it all looks off - (Basically the days where I didn't understand anatomy) It's shocking how useful it is so I'm really impressed that you're looking into it rather than putting it off for years like I did DX

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Saltbae In reply to leafturtle [2016-05-25 06:10:45 +0000 UTC]

Ya, I normally just continuously look at my leg or arm or even my hand to observe what it looks like. It's a bit funny because I get odd looks when I'm just staring at my arm because I just noticed something knew with how my arm looks if I move it a certain way. I'm trying not to shy away but I just have to keep trying or else I'll never get any better.

With people and art, they just assume it's easy because "Oh hey just have someone teach you have to move a pencil and make certain lines and we can draw" and it's just so aggravating to me when people don't realize how long it actually takes. I'm not even close to being good in my opinion but I've still worked hard to get to where I am today. Truthfully almost every night lately when I'm laying in bed trying to sleep I'm just thinking about what tutorials I need to look up so I can learn and how I can improve and even with my newest way of coloring I had been laying in bed for hours thinking about how I could apply it.Β

Ah, ya drawing until my wrists hurt is becoming a more common occurrence for me just like my doctor is like "Okay you can draw but stop before it starts hurting" and then I'm just like "Okay draw through the pain, got it." I mean I probably shouldn't be doing that but like I need to draw to get better and lately I just want to continue getting better. It's awesome finding another artist who shares the same thought pattern as myself when it comes to working on their art!!!

Up and coming artists are the best by the way. I started to follow like these two people sometime last year and I'm just looking at their artwork now and it's like "Whoa when did this happen?!" it's just such a cool thing and motivates me to get better. I mean I feel like I've gotten better without a doubt just from like New Years. Also drawing realisticallyΒ like I hate having to learn how to do it but I know I need to so I just like marathon anatomy tutorials from like Sycra and Proko and then just looking at Senshistock for hours and observing her stuff. Just ah drawing and anatomy are hard but if it was easy you wouldn't get that accomplished feeling that happens when you draw something super well.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

leafturtle In reply to Saltbae [2016-05-25 07:05:49 +0000 UTC]

I do that too!! XD I'm moving my arm around all over the place and looking at it and people are like wtf she doing? XD Except my friends just go, "Are you drawing?" "Yup." XD It can be very easy to shy away to go the easy way but yes, only practice will make you better!

Yeah DX It's so frustrating!! It takes SO MUCH WORK!! And not only that but thinking creatively is actually more difficult than people think - I remember in school whenever we would do creative writing I would LOVE it but the only thing some people could think of writing about was their holiday!! I was so shocked because it's such a boring topic! You could write about ANYTHING!! Agh I was so surprised XD

It's good to view your art in a critical manner - good to be proud of it but it annoys me when people think something is just the best thing when they could be thinking of ways to improve it that kind of mind-set won't help you to improve!! So it really annoys me DX I also remember when people used to say things like, "Ah I don't like my work." Just to get compliments >.> I remember a friend of mine responded to someone who said that; giving them tips and such on how they could improve and they took it as offence!! I was there like: if you can't handle criticism let alone TIPS YOU WILL NOT IMPROVE!!

I know I do it but also be careful - I've heard some stories and pictures of artists who would draw all the time until their hands really hurt and it got to a point where they can't draw for more than a few hours at a time and some even need hand braces So I'm not saying don't stop but just be careful ^^ I know I don't do it all of the time but looking after what you've got should be your first priority XD But yeah XD such an artist thing to say XD DRAWING IS TOP PRIORITY!! XD Didn't mean to get so serious there DX I just don't want it to happen to others

They ARE!! And wow!! It's so cool to see progress like that!! I know I still have a lot to work on but since I've started to get my style more down pact it might not be so drastic in terms of change apart from more realistic (hopefully) Ahh I hate it too but it is so helpful in the end!! Even just getting the basics down like where the elbows go to and proportion of how the head should sit in terms of the rest of the body etc. brings an entirely new dynamic to your art! And I've been watching Sycra too and Proko!! And it certainly does feel like an achievement ^^ And it also feels so good when someone asks you about something (I usually help my sister out with proportion and explain how bone structure works sometimes) and it feels SO GOOD to be able to pass on my knowledge like that as well as apply it to my art!! It really makes it all worth it!! <3

Saltbae In reply to leafturtle [2016-05-27 03:36:09 +0000 UTC]

Ya, it's really funny another thing I do is I will accidently be staring awkwardly at someone so I can study their pose, how the shadows and folds on their clothes work, and how the shadows on their face are. I always have to remind myself not to be staring at strangers ;^_^Β

Creative writing was the main reason I made this DA account and I like remember in class always writing stories for my projects like in ten minutes and getting really good grades and everyone is always like "Wow you're so talented" and I'm like "Nah man, I literally sit in front of my computer all day and write or read." just people need to learn that to get better at something, effort needs to be made.

Also, creative criticism is surprisingly my favorite thing because it's just there to help you improve on something you may not have even noticed. People who think they're the best of the best is just annoying because no, things like drawing or writing are something you are constantly getting better at. There's no finishing point to improving because the more you draw or write the better you'll become over a slow amount of time. Always look at your work with a critical eye, though, you'll only get better.

Ya, I wasn't able to draw until today and even then I had to be careful not to overdo it. My wrist will normally go out for about four to five days, once it took my two weeks before it was better. I really do need to be careful with it since I naturally have very weak wrists since I may or may not have been a talented child who broke her wrists at a young age. So I just need to know how to limit myself because I have at least three different wrists braces at this point because it just gets really bad.

I'm just in love with seeing how artists improve seriously such an inspirational thing. Proportion, by the way, will always be a challenge for me I think because I can never really see things from a perspective so I don't know how long something would be in certain positions. I mean I might be able to get over that as time goes on (hopefully) but for now, I will just cry over art and try my hardest. Learning from Sycra and Proko have been a huge help. Even if they're not the type of bodies I want to draw and I'm not going for a complete realistic anatomy feel, it still helps just watching and learning about all the parts of the body. I also happen to have an older sister who draws however she mostly just will find a picture of the internet and remake it herself in her sketchbook so I never really get to talk to her about things like art styles or drawing original poses and such since she just doesn't do that. My friend, however, I do occasionally get to tell her a thing or two and it really is the best feeling ever!!!

leafturtle In reply to Saltbae [2016-05-29 04:21:56 +0000 UTC]

I DO THAT!! Oh my gosh XD XD I try and get sneaky glances at people and study them but then look away before they notice DX DX

Exactly; I wasn't great at writing and barely thought about it before I met some new friends who all loved writing and it made me start! And then I really got good and enjoyed it - it did take time and looking back at what I wrote when I was starting out makes me cringe to no end XD

SAME!! I remember my graphics teacher at school was always really critical about our work and said: "The worst thing you could do is tell someone that their work is good and then have them get a bad grade because you 'Didn't want to hurt their feelings' well how do you think they feel now?" I was actually really impressed!! My art teacher was a little softer since some people got quite easily offended - and I did too (used too) But then got used to it and whenever he would say something like: Could I make a suggestion? In my mind I'd be going: TELL ME EVERYTHING YOU HATE ABOUT IT PLEASE - MAKE ME HATE IT UNTIL IT MAKES ME WANT TO FIX IT!! He was so nice and sometimes would even just be like: No I really like it, it's good. and I'd be like: WHATS WRONG WITH IT TELL MEEEE XD

Oh no I'm so sorry to hear that!! I don't have wrist braces thankfully at this point but since I play a lot of video games (Namely rhythm ones on the playstation) Which I play on pretty extreme levels I have to always exercise some caution as well as warming them up before I play - otherwise it makes my fingers seize up and cause it to be quite painful to play But I think in doing so I've also made mine a lot stronger - which is odd since usually exercise to do with fingers doesn't really come up very much In fact it might not even be a thing but I definitely know they're stronger since I can play for longer periods of time. Perhaps resting them but also warming them up may help? (For example I'll gently roll my wrists in circles as well as rub them with the ball of my hand) I don't know if it may prove useful - maybe it's just me

It really is!! ^^ For some reason ever since I was quite young proportion has come fairly naturally to me - and on the top of perspective if you haven't already perhaps look into what foreshortening is and what it does? Finding pictures and examples might also help you with the perspective thing ^^ I'm still learning too and when you first draw it, it can seem off or odd but overall and after some practice you can see how it works! Even perhaps taking pictures from odd angles of someone (if they allow you to) and practicing from those can help! One artist I've heard of who uses foreshortening in her work is Cristina Troufa - perhaps her work could also prove useful to study from ^^

I remember starting out like that to learn the basics - copying pictures helps to a degree especially when it came to drawing humans it really helped me to carve out the essentials and proportion of some sort but I wouldn't advise your sister to do it for too long - you can become to comfortable in your comfort zone, that's for sure ^^ I know that all too well And yes it's so awesome!! It feels so nice to know you actually have learned things from all your hard work ^^

Ya trying to sneak glances at people and being caught though is the most awkward thing ever. Like what am I supposed to say when caught. "Um hey, I was just studying how the shadows on your face looked, sorry man." like people would probably just give me weird looks if I tried to explain it like that.

Also, ya when I started writing I was just...it's too cringy to even thing about it. Let's just say I've improved a lot and even the writing I have posted here is terribly out of date with my current writing style.

My sister and friends would always say "Oh your drawing looks so nice" and I used to just stare at them like, "Do you not see the hand? You know the hand that I didn't even draw in because it was so bad. Why won't you comment?! I need to know how stupid it looks to encourage me to do like ten times better." but even today I am just given compliments even if I know what's wrong with it.

So sorry that this reply is so short and took forever to get to you. My wrist has just been so bad lately that it hurts to even type. I mean I've tried drawing a bit but it's just bad. I should probably get to the doctors soon, but who knows when I'll be able to get in. Sorry again dear!

Ikr XD XD I just look around as if I had just been glancing around XD Try cover it up QUICKLY!! XD

Mm, I haven't really written anything for quite a while and I feel like I've got a little rusty I don't have to same amount of patience to build up to the exciting parts of stories like I used too.

Ah I know that feeling - it's a struggle, I love getting compliments but I also want people to critique my work but my parents for example - if anyone I want them to be proud of what I do but they seem to be the least interested perhaps because they expect it of me - either way it hurts sometimes. but I definitely know the feeling XD I'm like: But what about this eye that is clearly in the wrong place in proportion to the head hmm? What about that?

No no that's fine!! Honestly I completely understand it's fine! Take care of yourself first and foremost - don't push yourself to respond if it really hurts I don't mind waiting! Just take care of yourself ^^ Look after it! <3 I wish you the best for helping it feel better ^^
