Returned back to Windows on the ancient Latitude d610, after messing abit with cub linux and ubuntu 16.04 I decided to look at it the way the original owner of the laptop would look at it with, he's not twch saavy at all, he hates new things that he's never tried before, it looks different and so unusual compared to what he's been using during the last decade and he hates me for messing with it xD he thinks that I ruin everything up everytime ;-; .... so I'm back on Windows, first I tried with Windows 10, but of course I wasn't able to install the graphics drivers because of hardware limitations, so no WDDM drivers were available, and due to software limitations I can't install the original XDDM driver because starting with 7, you can't install kernel mode graphics drivers, so I decides to go with server 2008, surprisingly it performs way better than Vista ever did, probably because it doesn't include all the bloat included in Vista (it's ISO is just 1.7GBs for the 32-bit version, you may get it from Microsoft's download website), I configured it to be used as a workstation and created a standard limited account, it's still supported until 2020

Ah yes. I am very much so aware of Win2008 and using it as a workstation. 2008WV and myself have closely bought back just about every Vista function fav.me/d9kv6mw
It will be supported until 2020, but software support is essentially on par with Vista. It's just a server counterpart is all. Very nice though

rip ;-;. I still see acouple of Vista era machines around me. I upgrade their hw components and install more modern OS' (Mainly Windows 10).
I also decided to give freebsd a try on the ancient D610 after Vista was retired. Took me a whole day to set up a vanilla freebsd (most of the time was wasted on trying to get wireless networking to work) and installed MATE desktop. I need to customize it abit more

I've better built vanilla BSD before. Tried PC-BSD, but didn't really care for it. I like Arch Linux the most. AUR is the most simplistic software repository ever.

True OS (formerly pc-bsd) was made to save you the 7 hours that I've spent setting up things in rc.conf, trying to establish a WLAN interface and setting up a desktop while being connected to a potato internet.
I've heard many positive things about arch linux vut never tried it. May give it a try later

Manjaro is a great distro built on Arch. But it has a GUI installer like Ubuntu and many pre built desktops. Antergos is more like vanilla Arch, but with the GUI installer.

I decided that it's best to go with cub linux for the old latitude d610
It's not easy for the owner (not me but a relative who's not tech savvy) to avoid malware (I find DDOS hosts, worms and once upon a time an encryption ransomware) and Windows Vista is finally coming to an end [ :""( ] so I decided to install cublinux, it's simply a chrome os + ubuntu 14.04 hybrid.
Since chrome os is so underpowered to be just a browser os (and that's what they do anyways, browsing the internet) so I decided to give it a try
They are into google's services anyways

Vista's "end" was at the very moment we stopped seeing drivers released for it on newer chipsets. It's simply been transferred from the morgue to it's burial site ever since Nvidia gave it the boot. In the minority of cases, if it can run on an old machine, and appropriate software works for you. I say it's still a decent choice. Tbh, 7 isn't a whole lot different. It's clunkier, but on today's machines it's like lightning. 8.x is ok if you have the patience to tweak it. 10 is my buyout excuse to force my way over to Linux (eventually)
I'd say you made a good choice with Linux though. On such a basic device, it really is the way to go.
I never could understand how people manage to flare their systems up so badly with malware. My brother's fallen victim to it numerous times himself, especially back in the 9x era Safe to say pr0N.movie.exe is the instigator in most cases Ransomeware? Yikes. That's like my #1 phobia

None tevh saavy users do the wonders when it comes to catching malware, without using nsfw websites :0...
Well thank god there was no important data on that thing at the moment the ransomware attacked

Okay after neaaing with cub linux abit
Let's say that it's ubuntu with a chromium theme
From the outside it's cheomium
Adter meaaing for sometime, you discover that it's just ubuntu
And you will still be losing support for chrome apps...
I tried using the special build fron arnlod's vanilla chromium builds (built from source) but it won't start the installation for an unknown reason it atuck in a boot loop showing "your system is repairing itself" and did nothing (i tried it on my core 2 duo laptop and it was working)

Anyway, I came here to let you know that I found another good "old-youtube" site: www.vidbit.co/index

Sorry for the late reply. I've been in the process of rebuilding my PC, but I've ran into some dilemma with a damaged board I got from Newegg.
Wow! That site looks fantastic! I'll register and take a look around. Thus far, it's been the most accurate of the YT clones. Any idea who the owners are? I see an account named Louis, but I take it that's just a spoof.

I have no idea who the owner is, but they do have a channel. www.vidbit.co/user/VidBit

They'll usually answer any questions you have. This is how I found out that the site is custom built (not MediaShare Suite).

By the way, I just subscribed to you on VidBit; I'm using the name "Santademon", which is the same username that I used on vStream(ers).

It's quite obviously not Mediashare, as far as I can tell. Site is very well structered, seriously this is the best by far that I've come across. And thanks, subbed to you as well. Was just about to give up on these kind of sites too. ZC stuck around for a while, but I was pretty disappointed by it's lack of progress and much anticipated end. vStream was great, but Alisson lacked sufficent funding.

You can't upload videos to MetaJolt, at the moment, but that should change soon.

I upgraded to Windows 10
I have to say that it's really good

performance = great (even Windows clean up tool got it's performance fixed, now it can collect the list of available files to be removed faster + it removes them faster, it deleted files worth 18GB it 5 minutes)
UI =Β good (way better than 8 and 8.1)

as for customization, I don't really know as I don't customize it a lot and I didn't manage to change anything till now

the upgrade process went smooth and didn't struggle anywhere and finished in a short time (probably because I performed a clean install before upgrading and I really didn't have anything in C: before upgrading lol)

Collects enough telementary data in a month to fill a hard drive, updates on it's own, UI is very cut down and downgraded from Vista. It's interesting to see how well they designed Metro, but yet no advantage same time. It's usable. Wouldn't mind it on a Surface or something.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

I-use-windows-vista In reply to a11ryanc [2015-08-06 00:15:06 +0000 UTC]

I don't know about filling a HDD in a month thing, but I viewed a comparison between disk space usage between it and 8.1 and 7, 10 clearly uses way less disk space that 7 and 8/8.1, however if it got bloated with temporary data, just run the disk clean up tool at any time, they fixed it's performance bugs and doesn't require to wait 30 mins to collect info and another 30 mins to delete them
the UI looks good tbh, better than whatΒ was present in 8 and 8.1, you can still return the start screen if you don't like the start menu, let's hope that customizations doesn't take so long to arrive

a11ryanc In reply to I-use-windows-vista [2015-08-06 16:50:07 +0000 UTC]

It's not a bad OS. It just isn't the Windows I'm used to, and I'm very satisfied with what I have in front of me for the past 3 years.
Anyway, I've gone back to Vista from 7. It was Catalyst 13.12 that was damaging the OS, somehow. All around was just a bad driver. I found some wrappers on MSFN, and 14.12 was installed without any issues. Works great too. Install is weeks old, and runs like a champ. WAAY faster than 7. Sleep is less buggy, response times are vastly better. Don't even get me started on DWM.. 15.7 is having issues with Vista right now, 15.4 beta seems to be ok. AMD is a little sketchy with use for Vista, but it works out. Nvidia is totally fine and needs no mods. Intel HD is the only real splinter.
10 visually is alright. Those white borders gotta go though. Yes, I do hope the customizations make way soon. I'm personally waiting to see what Windows Server 2016 will be like. If it's less tedious with the updates, allows customization there. I'll look into a dualboot with it, obviously bring over some client stuff. And yes, 10 is recording a lot of telementary data, and sending back to a 3rd party co. I'll have to find the source again. Remind me.
