Ahh, gotcha... I guess my career's been kind of similar. I spent a decade doing software engineering, although I never got the degree... and now I'm primarily doing cartooning. Granted I'm not supporting myself that way yet. Right now I'm on disability, but there's a plan for that to change in the long run.

PHP and some Java only did one Java job though, do a lot of C#/.NET these days.

could you explain what .net is?

Sure thing bro .NET is basically a framework it's essentially Microsoft's competitor to Java, and then C# is a programming language kind of a bit like C++ that you program in using the .NET framework/runtime, or you could do VB.NET, and there are a few other languages like that. Let me try and give it to you by example I find immersion learning is the best way.
So like let's say in Java you want to write something to the console you might do something like:
System.out.println("Do you like Mudkipz?");
In the Java framework, System is a namespace, then "out" I believe is a class, and println is a method to print a string to the console. Well in C#/.NET it's kind of the same thing but like:
System.Console.WriteLine("Do you like Mudkipz?");
So in .NET System is the namespace, Console is the class, and WriteLine is the method. I tend to like the careful attention that they put in naming and organization with the .NET framework, "Console.WriteLine" makes a lot more straightforward sense to me than "out.println" does. So in .NET they got tons of useful stuff from printing to the console to networking to graphics drawing to cryptography to database access to just about whatever you need.
Biggest important differences between Java and .NET is that .NET is Microsoft's baby so it applies to MS platforms only usually, however, there is an opensource project called Mono that makes it available to Linux and Mac. The runtime is also notably faster than Java. Most companies I go to end up switching at some point over from a Java shop to a .NET shop that's just the way the tech seems to be going it's a lot easier and less painful for businesses to get apps off the ground faster in my experiences, but everyone is going to differ, both platforms of course have their very detailed strengths and weaknesses and people are either going to be in the .NET camp half the time or the Java camp, there aren't all that many folks I've met in businesses like me who screw around with both and try to take the time to figure out what those differences are, most coders I meet in the work force are just there to get a paycheck right? Zoiks scoob.
Another big plus for me, personally, is I like making games in the Unity 3D gaming engine ([link] ) and it uses a combination of Javascript and C#, really great platform if you're interested in that sort of thing. Anyway though so I think the best thing to do in my experience is just go get curious and check out the tools and samples and see how you like it. They've got a free copy of Visual Studio here it's called an Express version: ([link] ), and that should get you where you need when to delve in and evaluate whether you want to do Java or .NET.
