What is metaphysics?

Thanks for taking the time to make comments, it meant a lot. I was thinking about picasso and de kooning when i painted High-Ocane Nude, and Henry Moore...he turns sculptures sideways for the gravity sometimes.

I've started doing still-lives recently after doing a lot of abstractions, and for similar reasons...so I know what ya mean. Variation!

Traditionally, metaphysics refers to the branch of philosophy that attempts to understand the fundamental nature of all reality, whether visible or invisible. It seeks a description so basic, so essentially simple, so all-inclusive that it applies to everything, whether divine or human or anything else. It attempts to tell what anything must be like in order to be at all.

maggiekat In reply to citrus3d [2005-07-09 23:48:50 +0000 UTC]

Thanks. Wow...you're smart. I enjoyed reading your definition of metaphysics, but I'm deathly afeared of any kind of philosophy. I'm a concrete type personality, though I have friends who are good at analyzing and would want to have conversations about this. Damn.

Thanks for adding me to your friend list. The more I look at your stuff, the more it grows on me. I like the new still-lives a lot.

from the way you paint, i wouldn't figure you a concrete person, since you are able to see past the concreteness of the subject.

maggiekat In reply to citrus3d [2005-07-10 01:02:33 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, that's really cool thing to say about me as a painter but I am a concrete. I'm concrete, oddly enough, because my brain is all over the board. I need idea structures that I can comprehend in 3D. Painting is physical, I'm making the changes happen with my hands. I can't do that with philosophy so I forget what i was thinking and get lost and lose the meaning.

How did you get interested in abstract painting originally?

citrus3d In reply to maggiekat [2005-07-10 01:14:45 +0000 UTC]

when i first experienced it hands on. seeing the actual works of the early 20th century masters, Rothko, Pollock, Motherwell, Klein, Newman, the list goes on.

then i began to study the artists, to learn what their motivations were, their theories on art and on life.

i spent a few months in europe a couple of years back and that was really life changing for me because of all the art that i experienced, and that's when i made the choice to become an artist myself, i've always been interested in art, and grew up in an artistic family, but i've always thought of it as a hobby, and until that point, i never knew what i wanted to do in life.

maggiekat In reply to citrus3d [2005-07-12 05:11:45 +0000 UTC]

Where did you go in Europe? What museums? I've got to get a grant and go. I went to New York once and I spent a week in the different museums like MOMA. I saw some Jackson Pollock, Picasso, Dali, DE KOONING, Monet, Matisse. I had tears in my eyes. I would definitely cry in Europe.

Tell me about your artistic family. I have one too, so I'm curious about your experiences!

I have an ex-boyfriend who introduced me to abstraction in high-school. He's very good, he apprenticed with Mark di Suvero. This guy was a big influence on my art, one that I'm still trying to shake off.

As you may have noticed, I haven't quite figured out the chat room yet. But I'll keep stopping by and I'll figure it out.

Thanks for going out of your way to say hello and critique my art. You made me a welcome member of deviantART immediately. Did you want me to critique Summa Babylonia? I'm going to look over your stuff more carefully and think about what I see. I'm very happy to have found new artist friends like you. It will improve my work so much to look at your artwork and talk back and forth with you about it!

i lived in a small town in tuscany, italy, outside of florence, called castiglion fiorentino. i traveled all over italy, rome, florence, venice, arezzo, assisi, san gimignano, the list goes on. i also traveled to berlin, hamburg, and frankfurt germany, switzerland, london, paris and chartres france, bilboa and barcelona spain. i went to 3 guggenheims total, in bilboa, venice, and berlin, went to the affizzi in florence, the tate modern in london and many other small and local ones which names slip my mind.

about my family, all but my little brother are very talented artisticly, and i am lucky enough to have their support. i also have a few relatives who are painters and sculptors.

and feel free to comment on whatever you want, i would be glad to hear your opinions and thoughts

I want to travel, want to travel, want to travel...Which was your favorite place to stay of all those places? Favorite museum?

I took a landscape painting class in Ireland one summer. Your still-life paintings of the moth remind me of it...there were a lot of big dead moths lying around in the white studios we used. And I set one on the table and I would look at it.

still life:
empty bottle
extinguished candle
deceased moth

I like the thickness and darkness of the black lines around the objects and the tonal variation contrast of the background to those lines. Also the pale amber color with the red is a good combo.

I'm signed up to receive email newsletters from the Tate Modern, but I get sad when I read them because I can't see any of the shows in person.

Wow, I'm so glad to hear you loved Barcelona. I have wanted to go there for a long time.
