I was wondering, how much do commissions for helmet cost? On average.

new helmets start at 500$, depending on size, detail, etc. The general range is from 5-800$

Do you do original designs or prefer to do helmets from games, movies, etc?

The deadspace helmet that I am working on currently is "technically" an original design, because it is an amalgamation of multiple types. But other than that I would low to do original designs, but rarely get commissions for them, and lack the funds to do them on my own (molding materials for a hard casted object are very expensive, and casting materials for a soft cast are really expensive. I prefer using WED clay especially for organic work, but it dries out, and if you bag it to prevent dry out it will start molding if you leave it too long, personal projects are kind of damning at this point.)(non drying clay take much more time to work with, and it is reusable, but it is very expensive by comparison to WED).
I'm not limited to helmets, I also do full suits of armor, I have the ability and experience to do creature suits, masks, etc, but most of my sales income comes from selling helmets from old commission molds. I don't make much when it comes to a commissioned helmet, until i start selling copies, but not everything is in demand enough to always follow that mindset.
I prefer creature designs, and organic sculpting to helmets and armor hands down, but the cost of a creature suit is MUCH higher than an armor suit, just by material costs.

I really like your work. I want to learn what it is you do to make the helmet!

Sorry for the delay, I don't tend to come on deviantart much when I have a large project going, it's basically work and sleep.
Thank you first off. What did you want to know? The process is inherently simple, it's the techniques that take time to learn and there is a lot of "feel" involved.

I completely understand. I want to make my own helmet, but I have never done anything even close to something like that before. I don't really know where to start. Was it just molded from clay and then you did the mold?

sculpted on a head form (headforms can be made by someone who knows how to life cast, or for 50-60$ from monster makers) Sealed with crystal clear (3 coats) molded in silicone (brush up) with a fiberglass mothermold (2 piece hard mold). Then cast in fiberglass.

Sorry the uh, was because it was just so random lol I only really ever get watchers if I either do a work that is spontaneously crowd pleasing or through commenting and watching other people
and Ill have to appologise, therell be a while before there is more work to come, one reason is in my journal entry and the other is because Im about to go move to my uni area and itll take a while to set up again

i just moved back from college so i probably wont post much in the next month.
Might post some progress stuff though. I have 3 commissions due in a month, all star wars (emperor prosthetic, twilik brain tail tentacles and a Darth Revan helmet)
need to drive 11 hours to apply the ones that require it, but im getting moneys and a free table at "steel city" con in exchange. steel city is kinda like mini comicon for Pittsburgh that happens twice a year

A belated welcome to DeviantART! I've been looking through your gallery... there's some outstanding model work in there, man. The 'Chaos Eater' is my favourite, though. You have a real talent for sculpture!
