Description
“Afterflood” Pencil on acid free Illustration Board 40” x 30”This almost kicked my ass, I started it in early April completed it the last day of August.
In the area where I live there is a flood plain, every spring these trees are by and large underwater. I came upon this place when the waters receded- I was blown away by the complex movements of line; limbs, branches, twigs and brambles that seemed to be hanging on for dear life. Because it was this complex I had to draw it, the composition was inspired by one of my heroes Franz Kline, often abstraction is the catalyst to my compositions, my previous drawing being inspired by Pollock. The unexpected difficulty in drawing thousands of branches weaving over and under, lost lines, found lines and keeping track of all of it was a bit crazy, but rather Zen at the same time. I worked form life, photos and pieces of twigs that I collected it was quite the journey. After almost eight months on trees I’m off to do a portrait, can't wait.

Armin, this is beautiful. I love the contrast you made with this tree amongst the thorns, grasses, and twigs. You see the beauty I see in Michigan landscape, especially before the leaves come out. I find baren trees to be so intriguing! Will this be at Artprize? Less than a week away! I hung The Catalyst last Tuesday and it seems quite surreal that it will be seen by so many people. By the way, I'm quite happy with the venue. They are incredible people and if I made the money their clients make I would buy a meal from them just for their incredible kindness! Will you be free on the 23rd? I know you will be drawing there, but perhaps I can lure you away for a beer with Paul and I??? Be looking for a call from me.

Takes my breath away. How would you not get lost in that incredible tangled beauty? The tree is especially awesome. Do you use refrence pictures at all? I'd say the shadows must change over the period of time you are drawing. Thanks for sharing.

your level of skill in drawing with pencils has reached the impossibleness .
It must have taken ages to texture all of the trees

It is good to see that you followed through with this piece, while others probably would have walked away long ago. Patience isn't something we see anymore- or at least from my point of view.
I think what makes this piece so effective (besides detail) is the tone and value thought. And I am interested in this central tree, (to me)it feels like the tree itself is either being conquered or conquering something else all together. The bulkiness and darkness of the above branches do feel like they are saying something-whether it is driven that way by composition or to pull out that tree from the rest.

Your correct the tree was pushing out from the thorns, nettles, sticks and branches. The cruciform of it was the catalyst that interested me at first-matter of fact it was called “mantis” at first reminding me of a giant bug
after four week on this i almost quit, but i would say to myself, one more day........day aftrer day after day
thank you

You're welcome. I always enjoy hearing the artist thought process. On so many levels it is inspiring and helps to translate and think about ideas and work in different perspectives. It even helps me think about my own work and what interest me as a student.
Sorry this message happens to be later then expected- the student life can sometimes be a busy one.

I think the more accurate statement would be that you kicked this drawing's ass. This is insane. I honestly thought that this was a photo when I first saw it. Then I kind of went, "oh, damn, this is actually a DRAWING..." I cannot even begin to fathom how many hours this must have taken to complete. The rendering is phenomenal, your technique superb. The composition is compelling, and interesting. I feel like the more I look at it, the more I find to like about it. I'll stop so I won't repeat myself here, but this is truly, truly, a triumph. This is going into my favorites for sure.

Always Amazed with your work. You're an inspiration for artists like me. I strive for perfection so much, and when I see your work, I see I have a long way to go. What amazes me is your patience. Thank you for sharing, and I'm looking forward for more amazing pieces. And I followed your example and stopped ding commission works too. Cuz it's 2 much pressure and I'm never happy with the work. I'll start taking my time 2.

It's more simple to take a photograph...
there should be a crow or raven sitting on some branch, but it is so so so amazing anyway.
Can't wait for your next work.
Have luck!

Its more simple to do nothing, stay in bed watch television.
I don’t do art for simplification; I do art to understand my world and my presents in it. A photo would tell me what this place looked like but drawing it makes me part of every branch, for every movement was my making and my decision, drawing something gives you understanding that just seeing doesn’t, IMO
Thanks for the good words Rainer, love your work by the way.

You have always got so deep and philosophic answers or articles that there is always something to learn from them or think about. Yet of course I didn't seriously mean this "more simple to take a photo thing" and I dare to believe that you understood it, still very good you answered because now there's one clever cogitation more in this world.
And thank you!

I knew where you where coming from Rainer but it is an issue and one I encounter often, I had the comments “dude I can get you a camera” “this is a waste of time, just take photo” this doesn’t upset me in the least but gives me the opportunity to state my case for tight rendering. In the end we all have our purpose and if lucky and we work art an artistic language. Take care my friend
