Description
“Afterflood” Pencil on acid free Illustration Board 40” x 30”This almost kicked my ass, I started it in early April completed it the last day of August.
In the area where I live there is a flood plain, every spring these trees are by and large underwater. I came upon this place when the waters receded- I was blown away by the complex movements of line; limbs, branches, twigs and brambles that seemed to be hanging on for dear life. Because it was this complex I had to draw it, the composition was inspired by one of my heroes Franz Kline, often abstraction is the catalyst to my compositions, my previous drawing being inspired by Pollock. The unexpected difficulty in drawing thousands of branches weaving over and under, lost lines, found lines and keeping track of all of it was a bit crazy, but rather Zen at the same time. I worked form life, photos and pieces of twigs that I collected it was quite the journey. After almost eight months on trees I’m off to do a portrait, can't wait.

I think this is the most insane pencil work I ever seen. I can feel the days and months of work, imagining all this labor, the mind vanishing, leaving just the artist and the art. Fantastic.

we need to invent new words that are able to describe just how amazing your drawings are...at the moment I can't think of that that would be accurate.

You remembered my photo's "wall of branches" and "treeburst" when I was back at that other account? It is looking quite similar. I'm amazed by the randomized cracks that trees can cause, making a netweave wall making it looks like "keep out, or you'll get wounded". And yet, in all chaos, it gives such a peace. What always catches my interest when I gaze through those branches and twigs is the random patterns it calls within my fantasies. Broken shards and mirrors have a certain special meaning towards me. It gets me thinking towards soul and how those millions of cracks, sort of, compose that soul. In nature if you just walk one yard further, you just get a whole new pattern. And that again can give other great links; it’s always unique, just like personality, but formed fromout the same kind of organism. It gives such an imaginary 3D-trip; hard to describe.
I think you’ve mastered those particular elements very well and it shows a lot of devotion towards that makes such your personal interest, there were other people just watch and move on. But you, you actually look closer at these apparent so common things and choose to pick out the raw power behind it…And then, put it in this result, making people interested by these “skipped and overlooked things” and really inspire them to go at their backyard and WATCH how weird and fascinating nature can produce things.
Maybe I’m stupid and long threaded about this... but you own that power my friend!

thanks Mike was thinking that when you showed the photos
It’s a strange thing that humans see more in a drawing or even photo then what’s in front of them. I guess when the artist composes the seen it becomes a bit easier to grasp yet this drawing and all photos are just a facsimile of greatness of nature. As the artist it gets me to really live within this place, looking or taking a picture never could

That is not what I meant. I viewed this in reallife. Before and after I shoot those pics I get those interpretations. It is what I've remembered and what I see back in your drawing that gets me warped back again.

Zen indeed.
I just completed a drawing. It is the foundation line work for what will be a computer colorized finished illustration. It took me perhaps 12 hours over three days. This was not, by any means, a supreme effort on my part, but it was, none-the-less, what I would consider a serious effort. I will post it here soon. It will be awhile, as, at the end of what has been a rather frustrating and tense summer, I now (finally) have a date set for my surgery. I go in for a femoral bypass next Friday. The recovery should take approximately 3 weeks.
I doubt such work (as I put in on my simplistic effort) rises even the level of a rough thumbnail according to your sensibilities, Armin! The amount of work, required level of concentration and dedication, and final result of this piece of yours is almost beyond comprehension.
That such work is available on this, of all sites, continues to amaze me.
Amazing work, my friend. To look at this for any length of time gives me what must be the barest awareness of the depth of personal involvement this piece must have demanded.
Your humble colleague,
Robert

You don't need me to tell you this is incredible, but I'll say it anyway: this is incredible. Before looking through your gallery, I would have branded this as a fake, but now I have no doubt in my mind of your handiwork. The level of detail I see in this drawing just floors me, and it's clear that you have a proclivity for patience that I really can't hope to achieve any time soon. I'm surprised more people haven't commented on this. Well done, sir.

To you I tip my hat. I had to draw sticks and leaves for a good month or two thanks to an art class, but I don't think that comes close to the joys and pains of completing this drawing. Much respect.
