Republics are so over done. i wanted to make each of my worlds unique.

They are terribly overdone. It sometimes look like people know no other form of government than republics,democracies and kingdoms/empires. A Grand Duchy is really a very unique form of government. 
But I'm curious. Who colonized mercury before it came independent? A single country or was earth already a united empire when mercury got colonized? Or was it the federal republic of mars who (guess mars was the first one that got terraformed,colonized and became independent) colonized it? 
And second question. That shield that surrounds mercury to protect it from sol's heath,radiation and solar flares. How is it hold in it's position? With laser or is it a fix construction?
And third question. What's that structure that seems to enclose the whole planet like a glass sphere?

1. Who? Powerful multi-national corporations bought mining rights on the open market. Who's the Grand Duke? Whatever company was the most successful after decades of cut throat competition with other local companies. Out in the vast emptiness of the Big Black, Earth laws have no power, so companies could pour their vast wealth into mercenary armies, assassins and blood vendettas. Not a lot different from Earth's ancient and medieval history. Think HRE or the Italian City States constantly fighting with each other. The "Royal Family" is just the richest and most powerful after all the mess and vast mineral wealth was exported to the rest of the solar system. Mars being it's older and biggest mineral export rival.  So instead of a monarch with roots in heroism in battle, this one's ancestors ares rooted in cunning, guile, accounting, backstabbing and corruption.. again much like our history.

2. What is the shield? Exactly. It's a shield. It's dual purpose is to block the massive solar winds so close to Mercuries orbit, shade the planet from intense light and radiation to a more tolerable level and convert that raw power and heat into energy.

3. It's a glass sphere.. duh. A geodesic dome to keep the air in. A World House, Parra-Terraforming.

End how is it fixed around the planet on scientific base? With laser, fix construction or held in an orbit by mercury's own gravity (like earth orbit satellites)? Plus does it also shelter the planet from impacts with asteroids and other objects?
