Description 2DForever

I really miss the excitement of arcades and the frantic continue systems. Timer counting down and looking beat up, rummaging through my pockets for another 50 pence piece only to find the counter has reached zero. That’s right kids, IT’S A BAD METAPHOR FOR LIFE.

But in all seriousness, I love the feeling of arcades. While the other kids were out playing in the sunshine, I was in an arcade surrounded by smokey gamblers wasting loads of money every Saturday. I was inspired to do this from my very own 404 error page . The Street Fighter 2 continue screen is truly a classic and I wanted to capture that here. I also wanted to make my own take of Ryu (again) looking more Japanese (again).

So remember, keep those … continue coins … lined up. Yeah, that’s another bad metaphor.

It looks like Ryu's thinking: Why didn't my Shoryuken or Hadoken work?

Heheh, I remember these days. I always made sure to keep my quarters handy, even playing the game with a few in my hand (as risky as that was to actual gameplay).

Ah, quite the memories here; thanks for the bit of nostalgia and coolness!

^_^

Keep up the great work!

I immediately recognized this from the SF2 screen. Been whacked enough times to have that image etched in my mind.

And hell yea for more asian looking Ryu lol. Capcom be proud of your Japanese heritage and make Ryu look somewhat asian for once haha

Thanks I think Ryu tends not to look Japanese because they're all generic anime faces, which don't particularly look like any nationality!

Oh, nostalgia [link]
I love the stylistic realism, especially in conjunction with the bitchin eyebrows. Great work.

One of my best memories of the arcade was actually from only about 5 years ago. I was killing time in an arcade while waiting for somebody to show up so I could buy, conveniently enough, an arcade stick. I dropped a quarter into the nearby SF2 cabinet and played for a bit when I noticed a stranger was watching over my shoulder. On my death, he pointed to the second player side and held out a quarter. I nodded. We proceeded to pummel each other for a few rounds and were both really getting into it. We would groan when we lost and throw our hands in the air upon victory. It was a blast. As we left, we shook hands and he said something to me in Spanish. I realized after he left, that he didn't speak any English during our interaction, yet we completely understood each other through body language and our love of the game. Street Fighter II: breaking the verbal language barrier.

During the late 90s/early 00s was when I noticed arcades were dying out. The last big arcade I can think of was Dave and Busters in Cribbs Causeway.

Cool image as always

I didn't realise you were in/around Bristol! The last arcade I used to go is in the centre, but it's now closed. It used to house loads of great Model 3 arcades like Virtua Fighter 3 and Spikeout. Then after the Dreamcast came out, console technology caught up with Arcades it seemed, so they seemed to die out...

Still, it's my intention to one day buy an arcade cabinet to have at home

Sounds good. I remember seeing some Virtual On cabinets that were surprisingly cheap. I always thought the two gear stick control system was odd, but I liked it anyway because the robots were cool

Wow, a Virtual On cabinet would be great! I tried the Arcade one once after playing the Saturn version.. it was difficult to control, but great fun. Early days equivalent of dual analogues I guess.

Do you remember how much was it going for? I know arcades can vary from thousands to a few quid...

Indeed a terrifick work here, I got all my childhood memories comming back to me when I was young at me village's arcade shop (wich it was nothing more than a cafeteria for the elders but anyway) playing this game or a bugged version of it, iirc Ryu and Ken in this version could throw two hadokens simultanely (one a little higher than the other), Balrog's PPP/KKK move threw a little Dan-like Hadoken when it ended, there was an extra bonus stage with burning barells, you could change your character midgame () just pressing the 1P/2P button. The four "bosses" had allmost the same ending with different words (a wall of fire and the "boss" talking about themselves).
MAn those where the days ^^.

2dforever In reply to Frozen-Empire [2011-10-15 14:37:31 +0000 UTC]

Haha! Sounds like a hacked version - from what I know, there are quite a few variations about. that particular one sounds great... double fireballs!

As for the bosses ending and the burning barrels, that's definitely in the original game as well (In Hyper Fighting). The bosses endings were a bit dull though...

Heh.. nice one

Indeed a lot of us miss that fighting games are rarely in arcades now anymore..online play and all that is nice but its nothing like to be in a arcade together with friends all the atmosphere unique to a arcade.

It helped me a bit to build up a mame arcade cabinet at home with all the good old games inclucded ...

2dforever In reply to Reinhold-Hoffmann [2011-10-14 11:30:15 +0000 UTC]

Ooh nice, I'm still tempted to just buy an original arcade machine... when I have the cash... and the space...

Online play just doesn't do it for me. You can sabotage their game by pushing them when playing online!
