Description Always appreciate the visits to my site: 2D Forever

As with my previous piece, this is another commission piece. However the main differentiation is that I was allowed to go free reign on this piece, doing it all my own way!

So that explains why it's dark, but let me explain the picture...
This piece is for the talented writer JanaStormRaven (hence the watermark). The featured guy is called Mark, he's just discovered something rather unusual about himself and is still a bit shell shocked from it all. It's also worth mentioning he's a student, so that's why he hasn't got the best pad in the world!

From my point of view, this was great fun to draw. The mirroring aspect was fun, also trying to make certain elements believable was a bit tricky in some parts.

Now before anyone else says it, yeah, slightly inspired by that Silent Hill 2 scene. When the description came through it's what shot to mind, but I pushed to keep it away from that image, keeping it unique.

Many thanks to JanaStormRaven for the opportunity to work on this one!

Thanks, I spent a fair bit of time playing about with the small details - but looking back at it now, I would of done so much more differently.

Oh well! Thanks for the kind words

Totally

And c'mon. Don't be so hard on yourself. Though I guess that's to be expected from all artists. ESPECIALLY those who have mad skills lurking inside themselves

Keep up the greatness

I'm glad you liked the little print, was just a small extra. It's only from my printer (which is fairly good, i'll give it that) so I can guarantee it lasting forever, but thought you may appreciate it!

Thanks again for the oppurtunity to work on this, it was great fun

I always found the whole mirrored perspective thing to be a nightmare... Some people kinda cheat on it but you did a fab job here. Other than that, the expression and atmosphere is completely ace... even the body positioning, it all caries the feeling really well.

2dforever In reply to Lupinator [2008-07-05 12:58:44 +0000 UTC]

Well, I didn't cheat, but I am aware of a few problems that I didn't fix... but I'm always like that with my pictures! Thanks for the comment

Dude... haha, that's life of any perfectionist... Really, the important thing is nail down the message and atmosphere so at least you are getting your ideas out.

A little phylisohical opinion here (that I don't believe applies to your work btw, but its something to remember)... The thing about art in my opinion is that you should always try to get the idea across first, and let the skill aspects work themselves out over the period of your lifetime. Really, you'll never stop getting better with skill and technique, but it's all too easy to make souless artwork when you place all that technical stuff as your top priority. Plus, it's really easy to feel incompetent when you are just focusing on your skill aspects of art. Well, that's my two sense.

Sorry for the slow reply...

But basically, yeah I agree 100% with you. I always enjoy getting out the 'oint' of the piece, then I get bored having to make it look nice! But that's something I'm pushing myself to do more of, to maintain a higher quality - but thanks to you pointing it out again, not to lose the original context of the piece.

Thanks

No problem, I appreciate the time... I'm pretty bad with responces myself if I can't throw it down in just a few seconds.

To be honest, I'm totally victim to redering my works too death... I mean, it's easy enough to render, just ever time consuming...... and yes I completely believe it's pretty necessary, just not everything. But for me, haha, my biggest enemy is the blank page. :C

I wasn't going to mention that scene from Silent Hill 2, but this image represents how the series made me feel, which is much more important. Every game was about the protagonist/antagonist's introspective journey.

I wish the eyes weren't more contrasting than everything else. The dark lines around those eyes really distracts me.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

2dforever In reply to jonathanvair [2008-07-01 18:34:38 +0000 UTC]

Hmmm... interesting - Thanks for pointing that out. It was intentional, as I wanted to emphasise the messed up look on his eyes, but it's doing it too much if you find it distracting... hmmm...

Well, not loads I can do about it now, but I'll definitely keep it in mind - Thank you

Thank you for such a nice comment! I'm really glad you're drawn into the character, obviously he's the main focus(!) but I think that's down to JanaStormRaven's explaination. I had this image stuck in my head from the start, so it worked well - I hope!

The way the eyebrows are so dark it kinda looks like you just drew them on at the end. Also, the mirror doesn't look like it stays against the wall in the bottom left corner. And then the last critique I have is that on his chest it looks like the wrinkles from the shirt continue onto his chest.

Still, looks amazing and looks like you put some real skill and effort into this. Way to go!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

2dforever In reply to blahguy0 [2008-07-01 18:46:59 +0000 UTC]

I gotta say, thank you for actually doing some constructive criticising - I'm always, always happy to receive it

You're one of two people to mention the area around his eyes, so I'm thinking they must be too dark, or perhaps the pencil lines below it all are too strong... It's good to know though.

As for the shirt wrinkles... I can't believe I didn't notice that myself - not as in I didn't see the lines there, but they are in fact dirty smears on the mirror. But they do look like shirt wrinkles... Another good point.

Thanks again for taking the time to think about these kind of things, it really is priceless for me, thank you
