Much better! Sharper and more immediate. Remember to always keep the original version of your photos. Maaaany times you'll look back and think 'Gosh, the original frame was better than my edited one!' . To me it happens continuously When we start we tend to overdo with cropping and editing. Some useful suggestions I received when I was a beginner was to convert in b/w BEFORE than cropping. Most of the time the impact of the composition changes and often you don't need a crop. Try to maintain proportions in the image. Sharpen BEFORE converting in b/w or altering light or shadows, or you'll have a messy outcome.

Like this version way better - the tones seem more defined (though it's hard to tell just from my memory). What did you change to the prior version?

i did a slight crop to add more strength to the guy. Last year I used to use really terrible (imo now ) processing with really heavy microcontrast and heavy shadow and hilight tweaks. Going back over i have found the images look unnatural (I have progressed in my processing ability). Now I just add a little fill light, and add contrast. I find I like the processing much more now

Sometimes you have to try out the extreme stuff to discover the natural look pleases you more! I also do way less post processing nowadays... Or just differently, more subtle...

i agree completely. i would much rather some contrast and subtle dodge and burning to the aggressive stuff i used to do...i find myself reprocessing a lot of my old images these days....but i guess we have to start somewhere
