Description (For a basic view of the Birrin Bodyplan, which has 6 legs, see this link [slightly out of date] [link] )

Refugees, faced with starvation and loss of livelihood by the diversion of the river that feeds the vast lakes they live upon, were shipped to uninhabited badlands in neighboring nations. The state responsible for the disruptive developments paid local poor governments, in arms and financial relief, to accept millions of displaced people inside their borders.

Ill feelings due to the destruction of their towns and habitat, anger soon erupted into large scale protests which the financially insecure and corrupt nations had trouble containing.

Seen here is a vast march from a nearby tent city; angry refugees storm an area of newly (but cheaply) build admin towers created to manage the huge displaced population.

Younger and angrier refugees quickly turned to violence, attacking understaffed riot police staff with knives and other improvised weapons.

I believe that a form of society that can achieve a perfect Utopian state, is a hive-mind or hive-conscious species, but sacrificing their free will in doing so

Or perhaps a species that entirely lacks malice or the desire for social power.

This would be most ideal, and achievable with a huge investment in time and renewal of education and concepts (like these dumb people that hit their kids to "teach them a lesson", only for the kid to get a lesson that hitting is good and solves problems - all (or 99% of) violence stems from that)
As for a hive society, what point would be in it? It'd be one dictator manning masses of mindless drones.

"The helmets two lighter green strips are transparent tinted plastic. However they do restrict side vision."

It is probably not opaque, tinted grey maybe? Looks like you can see through the helmets, because you can see the head in the helmet of the one in the right.

Exquisite! As a computer scientist a lot of the biology is lost on me, but I really like how you've been able to create technology that is simultaneously modern (very primitive and very sophisticated things are easy to draw... in between is where it gets interesting), valid from an engineering perspective, AND recognizably alien. That, and the way the gritty realpolitik of this scenario clashes with its fundamental alienness brings to mind what I like best about Niel Blomkamp's work. You, sir and/or madam, are an inspiration to my own worldbuilding project.

Thanks, I agree that one you decide the clothing and machinery has to actually work, that is when things get very interesting

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

AdmiralSakai In reply to Abiogenisis [2013-07-09 12:54:57 +0000 UTC]

I concur. I'll wager that if (when!) we come into contact with a technologically developed extraterrestrial civilization we'll find MANY more commonalities than we were expecting.

I've actually run into this as a PROBLEM, where what I thought was a reasonable amount of technological similarity ended up making the aliens seem insufficiently alien. Eventually, I just decided to refer to things by more technical, escoteric names, and that seemed to work. Then I got into the habit of thinking like that in real life, as well (although fortunately not in day-to-day conversation)- the end result was that it turned my daily routine into a bad cyberpunk novel.

I'm loving the mandibles on these Birrin creatures. This might have been said many times before, but you're probably one of the few artists out there to make a "plausible-looking" race of sapient aliens.

That's a nice-looking, if archetypal, script. Do you have a cipher for it, or does the text here not have a meaning?

Abiogenisis In reply to Avnas-Ishtaroth [2012-12-26 09:00:35 +0000 UTC]

Actually at this time the text is quite random. As the worldbuilding proceeds I will develop a cypher, though not a true language I dont think.
