Description
(For a basic view of the Birrin Bodyplan, which has 6 legs, see this link [slightly out of date] [link] )Refugees, faced with starvation and loss of livelihood by the diversion of the river that feeds the vast lakes they live upon, were shipped to uninhabited badlands in neighboring nations. The state responsible for the disruptive developments paid local poor governments, in arms and financial relief, to accept millions of displaced people inside their borders.
Ill feelings due to the destruction of their towns and habitat, anger soon erupted into large scale protests which the financially insecure and corrupt nations had trouble containing.
Seen here is a vast march from a nearby tent city; angry refugees storm an area of newly (but cheaply) build admin towers created to manage the huge displaced population.
Younger and angrier refugees quickly turned to violence, attacking understaffed riot police staff with knives and other improvised weapons.

Beautifully done ^^ I like the emotion showed in it, and am very impressed at how 'human' these creatures are without appearing to be. They definitely trump most of the aliens seen in most science fiction media!

At the time of this drawing in the Birrin planet, how advanced is their technology compared to ours at present? Also, I like your work, I just found one of your works today, and I really like what your doing. I hope to see more!

We never may know what goes on in other worlds... it's safe to say they may be very much like ours, in whatever ways we care to imagine.

Fascinating notion executed in a compelling way. Very impressive. Yet a little scary. If aliens make the same mistakes we do, what hope is there?

May I ask a question?
The Birrin, are they an advanced race technologically? Because in this they have armour helicopters, a settlement and police shields but in other pictures they appear simple but with ancient yet vast temples like Kaybor Gate.

IF you come to Earth you can see ancient tribes in africa, the pyramids, and also space shuttles and the international space station.
The Birrin are a society with lots of different cultures and history at different stages of development .

Ok, but I mean the Birrin aren't helicopter flyin' and temple building at the same sort of period are they?

Hope you ll tell me... so i can calm down and use bloody ref when i try to do something from imagination

em nvm just read on your site "Design Ethic
My interest in science has influenced my style, and each major work I try to render as accurately as possible without sacrificing aesthetics. Even if the creature or machine does not exist, studying science and quality reference material helps me try to make each picture improve on the last. Photorealism would be wonderful, but perhaps in a few years. I also love doing line art, a fun style reminiscent of comic books and the first style I used when I started out.
For wildlife illustration, accuracy is key and I use a variety of reference materials to ensure illustrations of existing creatures are as lifelike as required. " ^^

I like it. I just have one little problem. The culture and technology is to0 'human'. There's more than one solution to the various problems a sentient species has to face.
And, what kind of ecological niche did they evolve to fill? That would affect their psychology a lot.

Vorthon In reply to Abiogenisis [2011-02-21 23:18:49 +0000 UTC]
Just consider alternative designs that would work just as well.
Even though the Known Space books aren't hard sci-fi, they contain good examples of alien tech. For example, puppeteer tech tends to lack sharp edges due to that race's built-in cowardice. Just think about the species' psychology, and use that as a starting point.

Vorthon In reply to Abiogenisis [2011-02-28 00:27:20 +0000 UTC]
Well, the helicopter looks like it could have been designed by humans. The riot shields also look a little too 'terrestrial'.
What are the conditions on the planet? Gravity, atmospheric pressure, atmospheric composition, temperature, whether the planet is tidelocked or not would all affect the form their technology takes. On a high gravity world, for example, towers like that would be a very bad idea.

I think copter is justified. Laws of physics are same and planet have very similiar pressure & gravity, after all. And from that distance you cannot see these little details, like different handles to get in and out.

Abiogenisis In reply to Vorthon [2011-03-01 21:50:12 +0000 UTC]
Atmospheric pressure is slightly higher than earth, gravity about 95% of earths.
Can you suggest an alien configuration of a helicopter?

Vorthon In reply to Abiogenisis [2011-03-10 19:13:00 +0000 UTC]
Rotation period would also be useful knowledge here. As well as the planet's Semi-Major Axis, orbital eccentricity, axial tilt, hydrographic coverage, average surface temperature, maximum surface temperature, and minimum surface temperature. Any large moons? What's the hydrosphere's distribution? Large oceans? Scattered seas? What?
I'd have to know all of these before I could make a suggestion.

I would say everything psychologically. Of course, considering their history as species (they was hunters/gatheres in tribes, too) it would not be surprising they would develop psychology similiar to humans.
And I suppose very alien psychology is way harder to create than alien biology. So Birrins as is are fine.
