Description (For a basic view of the Birrin Bodyplan, which has 6 legs, see this link [slightly out of date] [link] )

Refugees, faced with starvation and loss of livelihood by the diversion of the river that feeds the vast lakes they live upon, were shipped to uninhabited badlands in neighboring nations. The state responsible for the disruptive developments paid local poor governments, in arms and financial relief, to accept millions of displaced people inside their borders.

Ill feelings due to the destruction of their towns and habitat, anger soon erupted into large scale protests which the financially insecure and corrupt nations had trouble containing.

Seen here is a vast march from a nearby tent city; angry refugees storm an area of newly (but cheaply) build admin towers created to manage the huge displaced population.

Younger and angrier refugees quickly turned to violence, attacking understaffed riot police staff with knives and other improvised weapons.

Just to clarify, only the Birrin's FRONT TWO appendages have graspers correct?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Abiogenisis In reply to Oddsword [2010-11-27 05:23:25 +0000 UTC]

nope, in fact all the limbs have the same basic three digits. the front two are more delicate and dexterous but they can manipulate objects with all their limbs to some extent.

I very much like the sense of alternative here.
These are aliens, and you have made the differences in biology and history clear.
The shape of the admin towers, for example, is completely different from what humans would build. And yet they build their towers out of corrugated iron. They barricade them with crowd-control interlocking barriers ([link] ), and their guns fire bullets that leave shell-casings on the foreground.
The more we look at this apparently alien scene, the more it seems familiar.
Exactly what aliens and science fiction should show us

Love the protestor's spines, they really fit the aggressive personality, as well as his color scheme. And I know others have said this, but it does make me think of District 9.

The image is incredible and refreshing in that it depicts sentient beings other than humanoids. I have to say though that the 'Birrin' bear a striking similarity with the Hivers of the old Game Designers Workshop RPG Traveller. The body structure and such are very close. Even if they were inspired by that they look much better than anything I have ever seen. Magnificent job.

Jaw-droppingly incredible in concept. Too many science fiction stories have humanoid aliens, which is understandable to some extent, but it's quite refreshing to see someone say "what if" and do something different while still retaining reason and drawing the line where function trumps form (like the helicopter). Hats off to you, sir.

As a side note, the armoured ones are reminding me of the Overwatch forces in Half-Life 2, with the same symbol on their armour and their relative facelessness.
