Description
Originally released in May 2005.My final full piece. This image was a metaphor for my state of mind when I decided to move on from this genre. I saw it get cluttered. Too many glitz and glam and not enough truth and real illustration. From poorly conceived planets and bad compositing of illustrative objects in with ocean scenes, I lost my heart for it. I guess the biggest thing that hurt was how easily some found their way into the spot light because of the large and flashy. I can't count how many times I sat and stared at some "famous" pieces on this site and wondered how these passed as true illustrations. Knowing in my gut that if veteran professionals were to critique work for its nature many of the renowned would fall shamefaced.
So I packed my bags, kept my mouth shut and moved on in my work and goals.
I had to escape.
Thus my last dive into the world that is celestial illustration. Only time will tell if I have something left to give this genre. Until then may you enjoy my work as I intended it. May you see it with the true sense of mind that I had when I created what I saw in my imagination.

I absolutely agree with you on your comment about the quality of some of the more known works on this site. I'm not going to name anyone, but I've never grasped how some of the crap that has been posted here has managed to receive DDs and many thousands of favorites, despite the obvious lack of skill in the "illustration".

This is going to be so out of character for me but I think its necessary.
My sun isn't your sun, if I take a look at the night sky with all those twinkeling stars, or through a telescope at the planets that share our little backwater in the galaxy I will never see them as you do.
I can try to represent them through ideas, lines or even stories but I can never make them seam to be what I want them to be to anyone else but me.
Some emotional content can be carried yes, but come on that not hard! The idea of a thing is a lot harder to do then mushy stuff!
So even if we're all just making the same things over and over again it doesn't matter, what's important - I'm so sounding like U at this point, but I think he right - is what you find out of that experience.
As for the picture here, is that Mars or something, I'm no astronomer but that looks kinda familiar...
Were do you people get your planet terrains from? I'm like absolutely thrown by some of these planets. They look so cool!
Although whats-up with the 'liney' bits (weather maybe) ?

Man, if professional illustrators attempted to critique DA, everyone would be crying. Especially if they had experience as art instructors.

damn, this brings me to my knees. no adjectives would be able to justify your work. your thoughts are priceless as well.
if it means anything at the very least, you truly are good at what you do.

I looked through every single one of these re-released works. Looking through them one at a time, one after another, and reading the description was very rewarding. Reminds me of when I once wanted to do this sort of art. I couldn't for the life of me figure out what filters to use however. I -was- only eleven. Then I lost any decent art-program (I now only have MS-Paint), and just sort of... wish I could do these things.
My favourite pieces were Cold Alone, Tao, and Solace. Each for different reasons.
What I like best about your work is that some things are clearly 'art,' while some things (such as Solace) might even be mistaken as an actual photo of deep space.
Thank you for providing all this eye-candy!

I have not words to describe this piece, but it is truly outstanding and breath taking. I am not familiar with your art but is this hand painted? Could swear it was an Oil Painting - or is it Done in an editor?

"In such a misunderstood genre of art, one of stars and spheres, of worlds and visions, inspiration and lament, truthful illustration can be a hard thing to come by. Escape by Absolutehalo is unique. It chimes with chords of originality, teems with light, and truly captivates what we can only dream of. It is an escape, both aesthetically and philosophically, from the confines of today's world."
Felt the need to state the full passage I gave when suggesting this.

The composition and color choice is just amazing. You no doubt deserve the DD that you were finally awarded! The description and explanation of the piece only add to its depth. Excellent work.

I agree with
If this is something that you can express yourself through then there is no reason to let others lack of expression stop you. You've done a good job on this one, and you should be proud that it is recognized now by being a DD.
Congrats.

Congrats on the DD, but I don't agree that someone should give up something they love just because other people are working their hardest to ruin it for you. You have to fight back in the only way you can: originality, quality, and vision. You seem to have plenty of all three and you of all people should've been one of the fighters. Still, congrats again on a worthy piece that is a definite example of originality in space art.

Wow. what an absolutely beautiful piece with absolutely beautiful words to go along with it.
You will be missed in this art field, I am slowly beginning to think that that "flashy glitz and glam" part is me...
But anyways, great job, I hope you find what you are looking for in art. Thanks for being a part of deviantart.

From what I've seen through all your work, all your pieces have some sort of stroy behind them. Many people will put up a picture of their dog "Ralf" or draw a little dragon with a crayon, scan it, and submit, but your art is very meaningfull.
I have yet to see anyone else do as good a job with this Sci-Fi genre as you.
Just wanted to let you know I look forward to seeing many more great things from you.
I myself have nearly no means of putting up my work, I'm a pencil/ink artist, and have nearly no access to a decent scanner.
The little work that I do have up is from my humble attempts with photoshop.
I would be very delighted if you could share with me what program(s) you use?
Computer art is quite different then traditional.
I'm also going to school as a Graphic Designer, and soon going into animation, so any advice on programs to Download, or Purchase would be great.
Once again, great work
Cheers

Hmm... First let me say thank you for the compliments and the measure of explanation on your thoughts about my work. That means a lot.
In regards to my software use, all of the work you see in my gallery was completely done in Photoshop 7.0, CS, or CS2. Some images have Terragen ground renders, but those tend to be from friends of mine or renders posted for public use.
For design work Photoshop and Illustrator are the two main programs I'd suggest. I'm a graphic designer and media producer and I tend to fall back on Photoshop quite extensively, even with a good deal of print work as the newer versions of Photoshop and .PDF file creation allows for better control. Illustrator will grant a lot of ability in print and generally takes the front row in print software. I'd also recommmend Quark, Flash, Adobe Premier, Adobe After Effects, and Final Cut Pro for Macs. Those pieces will definately give you a leg up when you begin pursuit in design and multimedia. Now a days it pays for a designer to be able to work across multiple medias. From pencil and paper to the digital drawing board, to audio, interactive design and video.
You'll be worth a lot more to a design firm with more head knowledge and skill in several areas because most firms do entire corporate branding from company logo types to full blown media productions, including interactive websites to television commercials.
I'd also suggest purusing photography a bit. Even if you have to work with film, Canon has a few inexpensive film cameras (K2 and T2. Both under 200 dollars) that could get you started. From there move on to a semi-pro grade digital SLR such as the Canon 30D (I use a 20D and will use it for quite some time to come. The 30D was just very recently released and is an "upgrade" to the 20D.) or Nikon D50.
There's plenty of things to consume and take in as a designer but the most important is not the tools but developing the instinct to create. Good luck with your future. I wish you the best. Design is a great field to be in.

That's a very original approach to celestial illustration, I really like this unusual way in which you did it, as if simplified down to a texture, and yet with an overall complex look and working composition. The lighting and those ships, which guide the eye up the piece, nicely round this up

Denial ain't just a river in Egypt. It is when you're trying to 'escape' though ;D.
I've always been facinated with the spacescape genre. The images beamed back from NASA space probes have given us just a glimpse of the possabilities that may exist, and yet leaves our imaginations starved for more. It takes some guts to give everyone else a black eye while sounding a bit like a prima donna, but perhaps you deserve to critiqe others more than anyone else (you do set the bar pretty high though). Nice way to go out... By bringing us all back down to Earth.

I went with a similar concept with my "Escape." You have a much more radiant golden ambience to yours. It's gorgeous, easily one of my favorites!
