A living room scene I did using Autodesk 3Ds Max 2012 (My first interior scene ever). The final render contains some noise that I tried getting rid of but failed.. so be kindRelated content

are you using like area lights? or lamination planes? cause those tend to have noise in them, in C4d you can set the area light shadow subdivs and light divs higher to get less noise.... (also like the amount of photons or caustic samples can help in this matter, in you render settings and/or light setting)
also trie Vray for max...... It doesn't produce this kind of noise.

No area lights over here, just the main Mr Sunlight and two Mr Portal lights. I also deleted the glass materials on the windows so as to reduce photon counts and so on. Haha to be honest I did try out Vray once but the render settings scared me and I decided to stick to good old Mental Ray. The main reason for the noise is my crappy baby graphics card. iRay needs a monster GPU.

ok I see the lights are different from v-ray c4d then....

It seems youhave lots of glossy materials -- that can contribute to noise a lot. Try turning down the reflectivity on some mats--that'll allow you to turn up glossyness and have a similar effect. Faster renders, less noise.

That's a good tip, I'll keep that in mind for my next scene The main reason for the noise in this render is that I was trying out the new iRay renderer for the first time and it uses GPUs to render. Now the graphics card I have is an Nvidia 9500gt 1GB which has around 32 CUDA cores and for iRay to function properly you need atleast 512 CUDA cores. So long story short I did not give this render enough time for the noise to go away completely. My second iRay scene is an improvement though (I think). Sorry for the long boring reply. \m/

Long replies are the best. :3
I don't think you need quite 512 cores...I mean, only the highest end Nvidia cards have that many. I just got a new GTX 560Ti 2GB (I have Octane render, my GTX 260 didn't have enough VRAM) and it only has like 336--and works super well with Octane. Haven't tried it with iRay yet. I can understand the noise now though...32 cores. XDD
I never mentioned in my last comment: I love the scene, particularly all the Van Gogh paintings.

Thank you ! Van Gogh was a boss !
Haha come on don't hate on my 32 CUDA cores, atleast I can play Skyrim on it
How is Octane Renderer by the way ? I installed it once and my PC almost died so I uninstalled it immediately. I am aiming for a GTX 580 but it will have to wait, unless I sell my kidneys.

Too bad his paintings are so expensive. XD
Octane is pretty great. They have a new plugin for max (unfortunately they sell it as a seperate product...confusing) which should streamline the workflow. I've never had any computer-ish troubles with it, other than slow response time in the viewport 'cause the videocard is being used. It's still not out of beta, technically, but it's got some fantastic features.
When you get a new videocard, don't forget that VRAM is like the biggest thing. I got the 560Ti 2GB because it's the only 2GB card for a decent price... (then, if you want more, you end up paying thousands for a card. It's ridiculous!) Then, Octane is considering making a kind of GPU database of all their users, so you can devote your card to be used by anyone at some time frame. If they do that, imagine the render speeds..

You can always download his paintings as wallpapers haha
I saw the stuff people are doing with Octane and it's unbelievable. Yea VRAM matters the most, I have my eye on the Nvidia GTX580 3GB (3072MB GDDR5. I'll have to change my motherboard though, and my processor. Or I'll just end up getting the same card as yours.
The Blender guys have done the same, people from all over the world volunteer their PCs so it's like a HUGE render farm for free. Too bad it only supports Blender for now. Technology goddamit

Hard to hang on my wall without tearing.
I'm hoping to hit that "unbelievable" mark soon, but it seems like you can get so close yet something's missing. So aggravating!
Get the GTX580 if you can afford it. Not only is the 3GB a huge advantage, but it gives you an excuse to get a better overall setup.
I didn't know that the Blender guys were doing that...which is odd 'cause most of my friends use Blender. (Max user, myself...student licenses are so wonderful)

I wish the Vue/Autodesk guys would come up with something like that. Would save us the smoke coming out of our PC's while rendering haha. Where/what do you study ?

Vue, totally. (don't use it, yet, but I've heard the horror stories. )
I'm actually in high school. ^_^ 3D is just a hobby. Going to end up studying engineering or physics though. Not too artistic. XD

Thank you ! Well I did reduce most of the noise using a plug-in for Photoshop but the remaining noise proved to be very stubborn

this is quite nice you should fix this don't give up! you might find a solution for the noise on the internet

hehe that's ok xP you used the new renderer? iray.. then I don't know the solution to your noise problem xP i wanted to try iray out too but i'm kinda busy with college assignments these days pff.. I use mental ray vray seems a bit weird to me but I've seen some awesome stuff made with vray so I think i'll try it out in the future

Mental Ray all the way Yea I used iRay, it's really good. It's just like MR. Haha I find V-ray hard to grasp, but I do want to start using it. What do you study in college ?

erratic-werebunny In reply to AbstractLogicPattern [2012-01-12 09:27:36 +0000 UTC]
V-ray isn't so hard it's just different from Mental Ray that's why it's so difficult for us to get used to it x.x I'm studying 3D animation and multimedia i get my degree this year..finally!! Have you studied 3D or you're doing it as a hobby?

That's nice ! Advanced congratulations on your degree. I did go to a college but it did not work out and I realized that being self taught is the way to go. I want to build a career in this field and music and eventually go into Film Making. Its a long road ahead
What about you ?

erratic-werebunny In reply to AbstractLogicPattern [2012-01-12 12:50:56 +0000 UTC]
hehe thank you Being self taught is fine too..most of the things i've learned are from tutorials or stuff that i've tried by myself..at college we just learn the basics.I don't think you can ever say you've mastered 3ds max anyway, there are so many things you can do with it. Wow you got a long road ahead indeed that's a huge dream you got hehe but good luck if you work hard it's possible
I like modeling (animation needs lots of patience..it's not for me xD)so i think..i would like to work for architects or interior designers! i imagine myself making some super realistic 3d interiors in the future xP There aren't many film production companies here in Greece anyway

Yes Animation can be a pain in the ass haha. Architecture and Interior Designing is a great field. I'm thinking of getting a degree in Architecture, you know just to be on the safe side. Come on Greece can't be as bad as here. 3D just got introduced here a few years back. You've got to have that drive though. Start from scratch and just work hard, everything is possible
