Description A lot of people on the internet who make a lot of mistakes claim to have autism and Asperger's syndrome. These cases are usually self-diagnosed. While thinking that this would get them sympathy from others, it actually makes people who actually have these disorders look bad. Having autism doesn't make you a non-functioning idiot. Having it isn't easy, but with patience and determination, people with autism can live relatively normal and satisfying lives.

I was diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome when I was three. Also, I have never used it as an excuse for my behavior.

So people with Assburgers, don't blame your dumbassery on a disorder, it's all you. Accept the consequences and learn from your mistakes. It's really not that hard and it would piss less people off.

No of course not. Β Never. Β I'm autistic myself. Β I mean the self diagnosed ones who use it to get sympathy. Β

Oh, I thought you meant that everyone who had some sort of autism was like Chris-chan, in that they used it as a crutch.Β

I have Asperger's as well, and I'm actually pretty well-controlled...OK, OK, For the most part...

This being said, I HATE IT when people relate Asperger's and any form of Autism in general to being braindead, because when it's all said and done, Autism is neither a blessing nor a curse: It can go either way!

I'm glad you do! You must've been provided with extensive therapy that you were eternally grateful for well enough to take it into consideration!

I understand the sentiment. However, most people do not seem to understand the difference between an excuse and an explanation.

For example:
I don't like being touched: I have autism.
The lighting in here gives me a headache: I have autism.
I have trouble reading facial expressions: I have autism.

These are directly related to having autism; they are not 'poor excuses.'

Now I'm also assuming that the explanation is given in response to a question as to 'why.' If I can avoid telling people I have autism when I may have to deal with them on a regular basis, I do. This kind of mentality makes it harder to be accommodated in certain situations - I've had to argue with teachers about why they either need to quiet the class or allow me to wear noise-reducing headphones, because as they put it, 'autism is not an excuse.'

I could bust out a flow chart of my symptoms, but that seems cumbersome.

[And I do have an IEP. I still have to argue.]

Those first ones are fine. I meant stuff like being a jerk. The stuff that contributes to the stereotype that Aspies are idiots.

minustwoseventhree In reply to ??? [2013-04-03 22:41:30 +0000 UTC]

Well, actually. It can be. Now if you're using "I have autism" as an excuse for being a jerk, then no.
But there's certain things it can explain. Like not being able to understand how someone feels, coming across as rude, etc.

and that of course is the exact reason why autistics require extensive therapy from disability caregivers so they'll know how to behave sugary nicely when they're out in the open, and there's always a chance that autistics will take said therapy ΓΌber-seriously!

I have Asperger's, yet I never use it as an excuse for anything but my inability to socialize with others well. If I make a mistake, that's on my humanity, not Asperger's.

oh, sorry to hear that. I was just using ADD as an example. But, I hate it when people use any disability as an excuse to act a certain way. I especially dislike it when people make fun of disabilities. Like this quote: "they told me I have ADD, but I just don't- oh look, a kitty!"

I have a good friend with Asperger's syndrome. He's actually on dA, and you wouldn't know it from looking at how he talks and how few mistakes he makes. People who say they have Asperger's syndrome shouldn't, because it shoves people like my friend into a stereotype.

I'm diagnosed with Asperger's, and my brother has severe Autism, so it's rather touchy.

I don't use it as an excuse. I am a believer in human ingenuity and perseverance, so I say that you're not bad because" of it, but rather, strive to be good in spite of it.

(I just got back from an appointment with my psychiatrist, and have an appointment with my psychologist tomorrow morning.)

Ditto. I have a brother with Asperger's Syndrome, and it boils me up when people falsely claim to have it and blame all of their failings on it. It's just an excuse.
