Description A lot of people on the internet who make a lot of mistakes claim to have autism and Asperger's syndrome. These cases are usually self-diagnosed. While thinking that this would get them sympathy from others, it actually makes people who actually have these disorders look bad. Having autism doesn't make you a non-functioning idiot. Having it isn't easy, but with patience and determination, people with autism can live relatively normal and satisfying lives.

I was diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome when I was three. Also, I have never used it as an excuse for my behavior.

So people with Assburgers, don't blame your dumbassery on a disorder, it's all you. Accept the consequences and learn from your mistakes. It's really not that hard and it would piss less people off.

This is why Autism is frowned upon by many users on the internet. They see people who do fucked up shit like Chris-Chan and they label themselves autistic and it makes people like me look bad.

High Functioning "Autistic": Bawww its not my fault I am a brat who steals and bullies I AM AUTISTIC I CANNOT HELP IT1!1!
The lower fuctioning ones I know: Stealing is bad! Oh, my fave football team lost? Maybe next year . I LOVE YOU ALL EVEN THE PEOPLE WHO HATE ME I LOVE!!!

Conclusion: The lower funtioning ones can be smarter and more mature than the higher ones, and they have it much worse!

Functioning labels Β are inaccurate and harmful to autistic people, so I recommend you don't use them >_<

And how exactly do "lower"-functioning autistic people "have it much worse"??Β

I rarely do, only when I am comparing them to some others. What else could I call them? Any suggestions?

Hmmm... Well... Actually, they don't. They are lucky. They cannot understand the world, so they are never put off by societies stupidity. They can be happy with little things, like going to school, so easy to please. They cannot go to work so the goverment is forced to pay for their living.Β

Selunai-Kingdom In reply to Little-rolling-bean [2014-09-23 16:38:47 +0000 UTC]

This video gives suggestions, but basically, describe the person's traits--when it's necessary.Β

I'm assuming what you call "lower-functioning" is based on verbal communication skills (i.e. limited vocabulary, if they speak verbally at all). It's problematic to judge how well an autistic person functions from things like this, because all the non-verbal autistic people I know are very intelligent and perfectly capable of having a conversation once provided the necessary accommodations, such as a text-to-speech device or whiteboard, to name a few. If we're accommodated, we can learn and work and earn money for ourselves. Government benefits don't provide nearly enough money to "pay for their living".Β

We understand what's happening around us, and if you think the people labelled "lower-functioning" don't see the problems in society, you're ignorant, quite frankly; they are the victims of it. All autistic people are.Β

Like good ol' Chris Chan, a self proclaimed "high functioning autistic" that fucks up more than any lower functioning one ever could.

It seems if they are unaware of their autsim, like the lower fuctioning ones, who cannot understand it, fuck up less.

Another conclusion: most of the higher functioning autsitics actions are 50% to 90% NOT their autism, but themselves. They just like to use it as an excuse to get away with shit.Β

I'm on the higher end of the spectrum and I don't steal or bully

Lower functioning people can scare me though. A lot of them creep me out.

It can be hard to understand inflection over the internet, though, and Asperger's doesn't exactly help with that.

Autistic people can use their neurotype as an explanation for something - we're humans too, so we do make mistakes like NTs - but never an excuse. And why would anyone think they'd get sympathy for a whimsical self-dx? :I Autism is so misunderstood they'd just get shit for it like the rest of us, if anyone even believed them.Β

Thanks for not treating autism like a tragedy~β™₯︎

Β I got Apserger's Syndrome & was really diagnosed for this by a professional (child) psychologist when I was a toddler, yet I'm usually act fine & sane most of the time, save for some emotional outbursts, having my Berserk Buttons pushed often, constant teasings & bad days. Also, I have good grades since grade school and now into my 4th year in college with a possibility of making it into the Dean's List in my college department by next year.

Β I have heard of those self-diagnoses for some time, and boy, they sure did make me feel ashamed of having the disorder even more, though not entirely. I do get misunderstood by people, even by my friends & family too, but it doesn't mean I'm not dumb enough to notice it! These folks, they tried to use this as an excuse for being mentally-retarded themselves. I don't abuse it for any reason at all; here's the equation for my actions: Whatever action I make, I'm liable for it, even if I don't have Asperger's. There is a fine line. Geez!

I often misunderstand people and they often misunderstand me.
I know AS causes my brain to process emotions differently from others, and I am not very developed socially, so I act quite a bit younger than I really am. The worst part is when I get bashed when all I intended was to help someone out.
the only time I draw the Asperger's card as a reason is when it would make logical sense, like for such a misunderstanding.
I also can't tell I'm bothering someone if they don't outright tell me "You're bothering me. Please stop."
That doesn't mean I'm not working on improving my social intellect though, because I certainly am.
I was diagnosed by a doctor, (When I was in elementary school) Β and my mother bought me a book about AS, written by a psychiatrist who had it.
It did say that AS causes people to have a hard time understanding social queues, and the reactions of others.
Usually if I get into a fight, it's because either I misunderstood the other person, or they did the same with me.
The ones that don't have it at all have NO EXCUSE OR RIGHT to use it for anything.
The thing I hate most though, is when I'm politely explaining soemthign and they suddenly shout "Asperger's is not an excuse for your problems!" when said discussion had as much to do with that as woolly mammoths have to do with the Andromeda galaxy.
It makes me want to punch them in the face.
But everyone has problems, right?

I have to agree with this stamp. When a mother where I live says that her kid's got autism as an excuse for his behaviour my mum says about my autism saying that at least I know what's right and what's wrong. Yes, I do have autism.
