i have got to put nearly all my models in a scene, i just can't think of one? and scale is an issue for me aswell

Maybe you can watch scenes from BSG or V to get some ideas.
Hulu shows full episodes from V for free.
Not sure Hulu shows BSG episodes.

Could also check out Eve screenshots, they have the best space scenes.

i can never seem to get thee scale right i have make scene but they never seem to look right, hence just the model on its own

Maybe this will work, have seen it in BSG.
Work from background to foreground.

1 Background, space, planets, etc

2 The cruiser

3 Support craft, fighters on patrol.

The cruiser gets the more intense colors and or more diffuse settings.
Support craft get lower diffuse and muted colors.
The purpose of doing this is to get the user to look at the cruiser first and then everything else.
You don't want viewers looking all over the place, its better to have a focal point.
