Description
Year: 2010Client: Private Commission
Media: Pencil, PITT pen, COPIC marker, Berol Prismacolor pencil on 13.5" X 8.5" Strathmore Drawing paper
This is the sketch for the guaranteed eBay sketch done for Baltimore Comic-Con. Before anyone asks "You did this at a show?" - I didn't. I worked on it from home, and took a day on it. The winner is a friend of mine, so I wanted it to be extra awesome with chocolate sauce and jimmies.
Also, Mantis is an old-school AVENGERS character. I have no idea what her deal is, especially those things coming off her head. I infodumped my childhood.

Awesome! I love how you've handled the antenna and other dangly bits. I have seen her crop up over the years as a character, but I am not sure I've seen a version that actually works as well as yours!

great one more time.
Have you got a "bank" of pose models or do you imagine each position with just imagination?
I'm envious by your talent!

Awesome artistry!
Shading is perfect.
Lines shapes and pose are just fabulous.
And the background is pretty interesting too. Those cloud-ish shapes look cool.
Perfectly executed.
You're a master.
Keep up the phenomenal work!

Taking me back on this one. I haven't seen Mantis in years. I know she was trained by this cult to be some ultimate priestess or such. She had like willpower + 500 because of that. lol

Your work is always so good and I love just staring at it.
I had no idea who this character was and immediately set off to find out, thanks for the amazing work you do and for indirectly leading to an increase in my knowledge of comic books! <3

Mantis was a Vietnamese hooker with psychic powers and martial arts skills who joined the Avengers. She then discovered that she was the daughter of the supervillain Libra, and had been raised by a sect of Kree monks to be the Celestial Madonna, destined to mate with a tree from space and give birth to the Celestial Messiah. In the meantime she'd been mind-wiped and sent into the outside world to gain "life experience". Eventually she gave birth to a son, had to give him up to his dad's space tree family, wandered the universe, split into several archetypes, re-unified into a single individual, and left her body to join her kid and his space tree father's space tree family in space.
tl;dr Steve Englehart smoked a lot of pot in the '70s.

Thanks for sharing another amazing piece!
You mentioned "Berol Prismacolor pencil"... did you use a white prismacolor for the highlights?
BTW... I received my copy of "Cover Run" in the mail recently.
Fantastic work!

have you tried chartpac markers? they seem to blend with the right paper better than copics and dry just as fast. ends up with a more 'water color' type look.
