Description
I thought this Muir's Corella looked so cheeky as he peered through the branches of the tree.wanted to know if these were Bare Eyed or Goffin Cockatoos. As I didn't know the answer I search for pictures of both and found that it looked closer to the bare eyed than the other.
This shows the eye detail than the other pics in my gallery.

Do you ever give permission for people to use your photos for references to paint? I would adore to someday paint these precious ones/?

Yes I have done and I feel it's an honour to be asked. As long as it is mentioned where the original photo is, as I know you do
And that you tell me, so I can have a look too.

One of the things that thrilled me most when I came to Australia, was to see the variety of birds here. It took me a long time to realise though, that you have to plant Australian plants in your garden before these birds will visit. In my first garden, I planted mainly the plants I was used to seeing in England and I only got 3 species, 2 honeyeaters and pigeons. My garden here has about 38 different species of birds visiting and I feel like I've gone to bird heaven.

Beautiful shot. I hope your neighbour does understand how blessed she is being able to see and hear these rare and lovely birds instead of blabbering nonsense.

My neighbour will now be happy, as the Corella's have gone back to their winter feeding and breeding grounds, where the old trees are. But they will be back again next year. I miss them

They're beautiful Eve, and they do look cheeky
They are only known as Western or Muir's Corella's, aren't they?

AdamsWife In reply to Zarafa [2007-03-22 01:52:09 +0000 UTC]
These are known locally as the Muir's Corella.
It's taken me ages to see if I could find out if they were also the Western Corellas and this is what I found -
Competition for nest holes
Galahs and introduced Long-billed Corellas are extending their range in the West Australian wheatbelt. Earlier breeding and more aggressive natures allow them to oust Carnabyβs Black-Cockatoos (Short-billed Black-Cockatoo), Muirβs Corella (southern Western Corella) and other endangered local species from their traditional nest hollows. While habitat through clearing and resulting deterioration of remaining woodland fragments is the cause of the cockatoosβ declines, such competition may prove to be the straw that breaks the camelβs back.
So they are also known as the South Western Corellas.

My goodness, you do jump about I never know who you are going to be next. Do you sometimes forget who you are supposed to be
I feel quite boring compared to you.
My Mum is like you in a way, she keeps changing everything around in her room and then she can't find anything. Me, I've had everything in exactly the same place since I moved here 9 years ago.

. I suddenly thought of this in relation to your disguises yesterday. "They seek him here,/ They seek him there,/ Those Frenchies seek him everywhere./ Is he in heaven,/ Or is in hell?/ My own elusive Pimpernel."
I will think of you as the Scarlet Pimpernel in future.

I'm sad that they are now heading back to their winter feeding and breeding grounds. I have only seen the occasional Corella this week. I still have lots of pictures to put in my gallery though.

Those are sooooo beautiful! They DO look like cocatoos! Have you ever pet one? They have the softest feathers I've ever felt. They're softer than a bunny even. In fact, they're so soft, it's like you're not feeling anything. (I know that sounds weird, but it's the only way I can describe it)

The only Corellas that I've seen in cages have been likely to bite your finger off if you put it close enough. I would too if someone put me in a cage.
But I know what you mean as I have stroked other bird species.

Will they be around for breeding and you can get photos of babies?
π: 0 β©: 1
AdamsWife In reply to the-only-nighthawk [2007-03-16 21:04:46 +0000 UTC]
No. They are already heading back to their winter breeding grounds in the forests where there are large, old trees with lots of nesting places. In the area I live, the old trees have been logged and it is now mainly farmland with very few original trees. But they will be back next summer with their babies to feed and annoy the farmers and vineyards again
I did have one photo of a young one being fed by a parent, but I didn't consider it good enough to post. The baby was as big as its Mum
