Description
Experimenting with how to make fur look more like fur...My personal feeling: Overall - better than without the effort, but meh. I'm not there yet.

Great looking fur!, but I bet it's a lot of work. Btw, would you share the name of the armor you used on this one?

I love the velvety fur on the nose, very realistic. Great attention to detail. Cant wait to see your Final version.

It's likely to be an evolutionary process over several different fur renders as I improve the techniques I'm using in photoshop. Dunno if I'll come back to this specific piece or not, but thanks for the nonetheless!

Thanks! I'm learning how to vary this for different types of fur. It's a bit of effort, but overall I'm pleased with the outcome. My next centaur will use this technique too.

Well, it's helping--there appears to be actual furpattern displacement....IMHO, naturally!

It looks pretty good! A little more convincing on the chest than on the torso, but still, I like it!

Thank you! I think you're right that it does look best around the chest. ^_^

Looks really good, really like this image set up and you did wonderful with the lights/shaders!
One question, did this texture set come with a displacement map? I'd go way higher with it, see how that comes out. The render's gonna take longer, yes, but if you're really looking for good fur, then that's just a sacrifice.
Other then that, the rest looks great!

Haha, the displacement is already at 4x the original value. That's part of the process to make it furrable. But maybe I should go further still.
Thanks for the compliment!

If it's 4x the "original value", I take it, it was a Poser mat settings, right? Probably so...
Here's what I'd do. Set dis to 20%, neg -1.00, pos 1.00 (or 200%, neg -0.10, pos 0.10) and go from there. Does it also load in bump as well? Play with both of them.

Yeah, I typically go to the 100% value and adjust min/max as that's easier for my brain to comprehend (since you're working directly in centimeters at that point).
I don't remember if it does bump too or not. I'd have to go back and look.

Looking great so far. Are you using Gimp, photoshop or something else?

Photoshop CS5. This was done without the tablet as I'm still struggling with the whole not looking at my hand while trying to draw things when using it...
I selected the blur tool and then took a fuzzy/scattered brush and changed it to dynamic > directional. Finally lowered it to about 30-35% opacity and then tried to follow the lay of the fur in medium/long strokes with little floofing / flicks at the edges.
