I only just got into the Arrancar arc of the Bleach anime before the awful pacing of the show bored me to tears. I found that I had lost all track of who was doing what, why, and what the stakes were. So I dropped it, but this year I started reading the Manga and it's like I'm falling in love with Bleach all over again. It's a good feeling.
Halibel here is the first Arrancar I've ever drawn. I'm never completely comfortable drawing the most sexually exaggerated characters. It isn't that I can't *ahem* appreciate them, just that I always choke up when I'm asked to draw these girls. I can't stop worrying about what people would think if they saw what I'd done--would they think I was one of THOSE guys? Ugh. She was fun to do, but there was some stressing going on.

Books almost always beat film, but you never know. Sometimes the differences are slight enough that only the book readers really notice or care; sometimes on very rare occasions, the films are better! *coughcoughLordoftheringscoughcough*

She does have a cool design, even if her clothes make no sense practically. And if you like the character, why not take a crack at designing her in clothes you think she'd actually choose to wear, rather than what the artist wants to see her in?

But, when commissioned, and when the commissioner makes it explicitly clear that he's looking for "sexy" in a way that implies "slutty," I figured I had to at least give him the real outfit. Even if I couldn't quite find a slut-pose I was happy with.

Not that it wouldn't be a fun design challenge. I'm a big fan of Tite Kubo's character design work, and to take a crack at putting my own spin on it would be tough but exciting.

I have to ask, what is with the high collars (I don't know the series).
Is she like a kick arse relative of Bazooka Joe?

Sometimes I also get a little hung up over the "sexually exaggerated characters".
But then I realize that I wasn't the one who designed them....and neither were you.
"They really do look that way" was always my rational.
But I do understand your concern about "THOSE guys" who take an alreadyΒ "sexually exaggerated character"....
and then just go off the deep end with it to the point of ridiculousness.
I also agree with your anime Vs. manga point:
Love the manga but not so much the anime.
It's the same with me:Β I really like reading the manga more than watching the TV show.
Besides Bleach, I find that for me the same is true for Naruto, Ranma, HikaruNoGo, Oh My Goddess, ect.
Not that the show is bad,Β I don't dislike it.......
but the anime just doesn't do it for me.

Honestly, I don't have the same problem with Naruto. It certainly has times when it moves much slower than it should, but I find it easier to fix by just watching it at 1.25x speed.
