Description I'm thinking of a project called China Portraits. So I guess this will be the first of the series (which may take years). She is a construction worker. She is pushing a wheelborrow to transport stone materials (or maybe earth?). The workers don't like when foreigners come in because they feel they are being watched by the bosses or clients. I don't intimidate them being an Asian as well, but my Canadian colleague is very prominent.

I had always admired the women in China who do work like this. Bus drivers, taxi drivers, construction workers. I even saw a woman jackhammering a concrete road. Here you'll do everything to survive. In my country, those jobs will be reserved for males. But what I am taken by her expression is that resolution to work hard and also her focus to do her job. Whatever happens, she wants to be seen doing her job well.

I still think it's a little pale and messy. I might go retouch this up when I have more time

***

Ok, no more retouching. I just sent this to SIYL for a project they have on violence against women (cause I no longer have time to make another one ). I'll just have to work for another set for my China Portraits AND that saves my drawing for some more whoopdidoos that I was planning on it. Maybe it's meant to be the way it is

I can imagine, but can't understand. Unfortunately I don't have enough patience...

My patience is always tested That's why it takes me a minimum of one month to finish an A3 size coffee painting. The latest one I finished took me three months cause I had to leave it every once in a while, especially when I get frustrated Then I'll return to continue until I can see what i want to see in my work. Most often I don't and just give up but I guess it's enough to be posted here. As long as others are enjoying my work, then I think I've done my job

Thanks for the vote of confidence... I believe I have the skill (as everyone else here in DA) but no I am not that talented... more like trying hard There are some who are gifted with speed, i don't so I have to try twice as much. I do have my preferences and eye for detail which people appreciate and I am very thankful for that

I thought your english is alright. English is not my first language too so I do make grammatical errors every now and then, there's no need to apologize

Important thing is that You know what You have... Patience and passion are talents as well in some way, aren't they...? In way You mentioned speed... I've received mystery t-shirts from dA shop yesterday and on one of them there is a text "Pursue your passion and it will become talent"... If You're enjoying it, got good feedback from people and improving Yourself...I guess it's everything in it's right place ok, thank You and have a nice days!

No sorries people can comment whenever they like or don't even have to comment. To see the drawing is enough

Nelsie.. I'm glad you didn't do anymore tweaking... this is really really beautiful as is. Hope Mili liked it for the SIYL project! This is a fitting artwork for it.. that's for sure!

Thanks Lou!

This is really meant for SIYL but thought otherwise when I realised I drew an Asian face for a UK project. So I decided to do something else. Then I ran out of time to make another one and asked Mili if this would do. She says she's okay with it and she thinks that it's really fitting on her theme that violence is interracial and could affect anybody. This portrait is not really about violence but I thought anyone who wanted to take control of their lives should have a resolution to do so.

yes, that's what I thought looking at it, that violence is interracial.. doesn't matter where you're from. Also, I personally thought that for foreigners, for whom English is NOT first language, and for whom cultural issues are an added difficulty.. this artwork of yours is really really beautiful and poignant. The woman is determined. Inner strength is what helps you get out of the violence, and victimization

Di naman, konti lang

As in, me naghahalo ng semento, nagle-lay-out ng tile, tricycle driver... Marami kaseng kakumpitensya. Pag hindi mo pinagbuti trabaho mo,kahit mabigat ang trabaho, may kapalit ka kagad...

Thank you!

\I thought in UK you don't do manual labor, I mean if you excavate you have tractors or diggers, big machines... This lady jackhammering, I saw her singlehandedly digging the thing standing barefooted on the road...

that's a funny notion that we don't do manual labour I live on the north coast of Scotland in a small village the sort of 3rd world of europe as far as the economy is concerned, but we do have boots & shoes most people in this highlands of Scotland have a lot of different work, sort of self sufficient, including roadbuilding, its a rural economy China though is so enormous there must be examples of all sorts, the miners there for instance have terrible work conditions, same as in the UK 150 years ago

I realize just lately that poverty is everywhere, even to places we look up to. But for us Asians, that's just what we were sort of conditioned to believe. That Western cultures are always better and more advanced. China is catching up on everything that modern life can offer and a lot of them seems more concerned to how much they can earn as well as their status. (I am always asked here, even by people I don't know, how much I make and I really really hate that question... Like my salary is the value of my person) It's always business here. It's all about the money. Just lately I read in the internet that a man sued his wife for being ugly (well formerly ugly, she got a plastic surgery) won the suit, and got a 750,000RMB (Β£75,000) compensation for it... Really weird...

yes I find it all a lot wierd as well, like in Afghanistan there are women now who have managed to get an education but there is also a craze for plastic surgery to make 'western' straight noses among the new professionals so is that emancipation I saw that the Chinese government is getting concerned about the huge disparity between rich and poor & its potential to undermine the government, India also is a place where there is the same imbalance, in fact it is a global problem I'm sure

You may see room for improvement but remember attempts at "tweeking" can become a disaster, she is beautifully done at this point but of course that is just MHO!

Thank you for the comment I totally agree with you so I stopped. But there's just something I unconsciously want that must have eluded my brush. I'm eager to find out. But if doesn't come, I guess I'll just leave it that way

acreativeitch In reply to aeonsiege [2012-10-10 00:54:41 +0000 UTC]

Well I've often found that what I cannot put together consciously comes to me after I put it to rest and sleep on it, my mind puts it together for me once I get out of the equation. So it may dawn on you yet. But leaving til the next beautiful piece would assure this one stays beautiful.

I gave the painting away so I won't have any more opportunity to tweak it. I have a many rest and sleep to help me figure out what's missing... But now I just have to let it go.

This is great work, no need to retouch it at all. I think the fact that it looks a little "messy" is great because it adds to the feeling of the portrait. I think it's perfect as it is.
