Love the layout style 
If doing in Flash I'd used a repeating wood background like this one and mask out the lighting like this (swf is only 22kb, resize browser and/or resolution also and you see it's viewable from 800X600 up to 1280X1024).
I did this pretty quickly so it's not "perfect" but you get the idea
