Description Huh... I imagined it kainda differently... but oh well...

I have nothing against deer... but a dragon's got to eat too you know... ANd as many pics of dragons as I have seen, I never really saw a good hunting scene... always the dragon eating humans or horses or whatever... so I made this in an atempt to show a dragon in nature... rather then in combat... ( I know that makes no sence what so ever... but I am tired any my mind isn't working properly right now )...

Dragons hunt either by swooping down on unsuspecting pray and cary it off to kill and eat it ( or eat it alive... depends on each dragon really ) somewere elce or take it high up and drop it to kill it if it's prooving too difficult to cary... OR they stand hidden and wait to ambush pray as it passes by... wich is the case here...

Now a dragon isn't build for land speed... and if his pray can outmanuver him at first, then it can outrun him easely...

In this particular case however, the dragon will get lucky as the deer will trip and fall, thouse prooving to be an easy catch for him... and so he will be able to fill his belly...

As always, the dragon is Draghi, from my story...

the others are suposed to be beneath... if you look towards the finger tips of the wing you'll see the other...

This is great. You're right, mostly dragons can be seen eating but not hunting. It's kind of weird. o_o
I wonder if the dragon will get stuck in the woods xD
The details are beyond awesome. I guess it must be hard to make something this big look like it's moving.

ajder In reply to Earthsick [2010-01-05 20:38:54 +0000 UTC]

well he will get stuck if the deer manage to get to thick forests... unfortunatelly for one of them, they won't... because this image has a sequal.

"I have nothing against deer... but a dragon's got to eat too you know..." Yes, it is better than a dragon eating humans. XD

Overall I believe you did very good with this piece. The details and expressions, all well done.

ajder In reply to retroboy78 [2010-01-02 09:37:58 +0000 UTC]

better? wouldn't make much of a differance for a dragon, though a human would be easyer to catch...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

retroboy78 In reply to ajder [2010-01-02 18:39:50 +0000 UTC]

Oh really now? Well then... I guess a human would be an easier catch. ^^

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ajder In reply to retroboy78 [2010-01-02 20:18:16 +0000 UTC]

1 human would be far easyer to catch then 1 deer... humans can't run quite as fast... 1 human alone in the wilderness is a proverbial "sitting duck" for any predator not just a dragon... unless that 1 human is a skilled hunter or unless he is just really bloody lucky.

retroboy78 In reply to ajder [2010-01-02 20:20:24 +0000 UTC]

Yes, you are right. Either just lucky, a skilled hunter. But liek you said, not just against a dragon, but against many other predatory creatures as well. Bears even, and sometimes wolfs (but not often with wolfs)

oh... it used to be very different in the older days... in medieval times when most of the land was still willd, wild animals were a lot bolder then they are today.

Very nice job! I love how you put many details into this piece and the action is really noticeable. The muscular building of the dragon is great, I also like the scales and the wing on him (?).
Beautiful picture!

how long have you been drawing? this is vary good, and it is a nice change to see a dragon going after a more common pray for once.

ajder In reply to cobalt-blade [2008-11-25 06:33:23 +0000 UTC]

this was back when I was doing pencill works... and I sort of envision dragons beying more natural beyings... ( they don't feed excluisevelly on knights... sheesh ).

Nowerdays I do digital work because it allows me to use colores... but I started drawing... about 5-6 years ago...

By the way... interesting avatar... have a larger versione of it?

cobalt-blade In reply to ajder [2008-11-26 03:18:25 +0000 UTC]

cool, I've only got one year under my belt. I don't do bad but i would like to start moving toward more realistic high detailed stuff.

I would really have to agree with the natural aspect with dragons, fits better.

I do have a bigger versions of the avatar still, I think. It was a pain to get it that size for DA to accept it, It's not mine but I think it's cool.

well you already have the basic understanding of a dragon's anatomy down preatty well... ( presumbing of course you drue those... no offencse ). well in any case, you need to start putting in backgrounds with your characters... and adjust their claws to look like they are actually standing on a surface... cause at present most of them look like their claws are going throug hthe ( invisible ) ground.

Also you need to add further detaill to the musculature of your dragons... that comes mostly throug hshading... but some areas of the dragon's body need more muscles... most notably the area where their wings connect to their back... you have to understand that that area would have two sets of muscles one for the front paws and another for the wings... so realisticly... they would be preatty bulky around the shoulders and chest.

The wing arms could use a little bit more muscles too...

Also if you are aiming for realism and a more "feral" look... you have to try and make their paws like actual paws... not like human hands... and usually the paws could be larger...

ALso you need to make it seem like the "arms" are in fact conected to the chest... yours seem preatty delimitated at the moment...

and more work on the wings... the wing fingers are too straight... try giving them a slight courve... that would make them look more natural...

Start shading your pics too... or colore them digitally... your choice...

but ALWAYS position your light source first B4 you start shading...

and for your eracing problem... that's not a problem at all... I do that too... just make sure you sketch very lightly, so that when yo uerace, you won't damage the paper... if yo uare gona be shading on paper, use soft pencills to shade... 6B or 8B come to mind... and always put a separate piece of paper between your hand and the drawing, so that you don't smudge the shading... ( if you are doing it on paper, try using a hard pencill... like an HB or an H ) if you are doing it digitally, erasing shouldn't be a problem...

Well... if you have further questions feal free to ask...

ANd I would like to see the larger versione of the avatar...

wow, thanks. you are one of few people who really do help. most just ramble on with their style. Im saving your post for the time being. there good notes.

I understand anatomy pretty well, it's just hard to reflect it.

I like drawing, but I feel bad that I don't do dragons there justice.

Thanks again, please keep in touch, it's nice to talk to a smart person for once.
If you feel like watching me, I'll post a bigger version of the avatar. just to make it clear, it's not mine though.
