Description Decided to do a study to improve my blending skills and use of values, despite me knowing that I've got to do more work on colour! This is to also help just improve my general drawing skills, since I tried drawing Jirou from MHA, and it just sucked so bad. But you can learn from failure.
So I'm going to attempt drawing her again, since I really like the show, and a lot of the characters that are in it so make sure you check back for those!

If you have any suggestions for who I could draw, or have any feedback for my work, be sure to comment. I'd love to hear it.

Should I post the Jirou portrait so you can all have a little laugh?

While this study helped me get a bit better at values and drawing faces, I'm still not catching the subtleties that are present, and I'm messing up my proportions a bit, and the planes of the face, so depth can be a bit whack at times, but it was a good exercise. I'm definitely going to redraw this one.

Hey there! Since you took the time to leave me a comment, I thought I’d return the favor.

I’d have to say my favorite thing is way you’ve created the shape and flow of her hair. Even though it’s short and not heavily styled, you’ve still managed to make it look really interesting. The values here also look great to me.

The only areas that look off to me are the proportions of her nose and mouth, as well as her neck and shoulder. I’m not sure if you were going for realistic proportions or were aiming to exaggerate them, but the accurateness of everything else makes those things feel out of place to me personally.

In a 3/4 view, the bridge of the nose covers some of the eye that’s further away. I think that missing that might have been what lead to the nose and mouth being so small. I did some quick red lines on this to show what I mean: sta.sh/02ddxgk7hzck

I’m in no way an expert with realistic proportions, so take my advice with a grain of salt. Good luck with your future paintings!

I was trying to go for realistic proportions, so I definitely see what you mean!
Just means I have to do a redraw and do it better.
It's possible that that's the case for the nose and mouth being funky, but her nose in the reference didn't
cover that far either, so I suppose it's just a posture subtlety that I've missed and it's snowballed a bit, especially with the mouth.

Thank you for taking the time to give me feedback on this, and more so for taking the time to sketch over my drawing to show what you mean visually.
That helped a great deal.

I'm glad you liked the hair, It could probably use a bit of lighter values, but I didn't want to over do things, I'm still learning the ropes for digital drawing, especially coloured drawings.
so I guess it pays to just focus on improving the drawings first. Good luck with your future paintings too, I'm sure they will be great!

Ohh, I see. I haven’t seen the image you referenced, so I was just guessing how the nose might look. And I agree that the hair could use more highlights so give it some shine, but I didn’t see it as a problem as the focal point was her face. I’m glad I was able to help, and thank you very much!

Yeah that's understandable, I messed up a few subtleties with the face so that's why it might look a bit weird to you. I'm getting better with values, I've done a few more studies, I just haven't posted them yet since I did like 3 in a day. After like a 13 hour binge...

Your values here definitely show you have a good grasp on that. And oof, that’s a lot of studying. I’m sure you’ll improve greatly if you keep going!

Yeah, I get carried away at times! Improvement is always nice, but you've got to enjoy the learning. and Thank you, the next ones will be even better!

It’s not a bad thing to get carried away with studies. And if you’re enjoying it, that’s a bonus!

It looks really great! I am curious, how it would look if you shade her cheeks more.

Thank you, shading her cheeks more, depends on what values, lighter or darker?

Darker to make her face slimmer.

Good thought, Thanks for pointing that out. I'm definitely going to go back to this study as there are things I can improve on it.
The lighter values could use a little more work too I think.
