Description if you thought the lineart tutorial was huge... this was even more annoying. my eyes are killing me. i found and corrected two typos before upload; if you find any more, let me know.

I'll repeat my disclaimer from the LLT. This does not cover advanced techniques; it would probably not teach much to people who know how to use digital art programs and make masterpieces from them. This is meant for someone who has literally no idea how to color digitally, and doesn't have the money for a tablet or expensive programs like Photoshop. Everything here is touchpad-drawn (my fingers are still thanking me for that), and done using only free software. Maybe it's not the best way, but it's a good place to start for beginners who have no digital art experience, at least.

And the result definitely looks shiny-- this is how I make all my art. Well, I sometimes trace with my tablet, but when I get twitchy, I go back to using a mouse.

This is great!

So, you don't leave any black lines, you color them all?

I can't get the highlights to work. They always go over my lineart! Can you explain highlights for me please?

I tried this and your line tutorial, and I gotta say I LOVED it. The biggest problem I had was getting nice, clean lines that weren't too blurry... with a little help from Inkscape, this turned out great! Coloring method's great too. Thanks^^

great googly moogly.

if that's the "lazy" version, wtf is the "anal-retentive perfectionist" version???

it's really a simple technique.. the textures are completely optional, and i could have put them on another tutorial, technically. it's nothing compared to real digital painting.

tuelumi In reply to alaisiaga [2009-01-26 20:24:34 +0000 UTC]

i think the difference is the number of steps. "Real digital painting", at least in my experience, boils down to this:
1) plug in tablet
2) pick color
3) paint
4) repeat steps 2 and 3 until there's a picture

lol. i just ended up putting a lot of extra crap in. technically it's just
1. color
2. shadow
3. highlight
4. lines
and BOOM!
no more chinese laundry you're done

mine still has fewer steps

alaisiaga In reply to tuelumi [2009-01-26 21:18:17 +0000 UTC]

but the repetition is a step... four=four?

the plugging in of a tablet is only an optional step. a half-step, maybe.

shadow and highlight are just one step on different layers and with different colors.

thank you! i don't use my tablet as much as i should for painting and such.. partially because i have a feeling it makes my computer freeze. which is always awesome, lol.

Ahh, I think mine is starting to do that, only it just won't let the computer start up

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

alaisiaga In reply to DeadWizard [2009-01-27 18:53:29 +0000 UTC]

oooh, ouch. :c at least sometimes when that happens it's possible to plug it in after startup and restart the driver. whenever i try that on linux, it just works like a normal mouse, until i restart the entire session.

oh, drivers. seriously the bane of my existence.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DeadWizard In reply to alaisiaga [2009-01-27 23:03:53 +0000 UTC]

NO KIDDING D: The drivers went on my scanner/printer too, but only the ones for the scanner... So I hate to buy a new unit when I still have a perfectly functional printer...

What kind of tablet do you have?
My tablet used to do the 'act like a mouse' thing too, whenever the computer hibernated or it (the tablet)got unplugged, but now it's stopped. So I guess its better that it just crashes the whole thing :skeptical:

alaisiaga In reply to DeadWizard [2009-01-28 17:47:35 +0000 UTC]

ohh, that bites. :c i'd almost suggest trying to find an opensource alternative, but open drivers are usually quite sporadic.. i can't even use this computer for scanning, i have to do it on one with a different linux "brand" on it, because it keeps just... not.. working.

i use a wacom intuos2 9x12". it's served me well for the past 4-5 years. i've had it happen with other tablets, too, so i think it might just be an issue with tablets in general.. like, i guess you don't really need something specific for a mouse-- but when position on the tablet is directly related to the screen, it's a different matter.

or something. drivers are so beyond me.

DeadWizard In reply to alaisiaga [2009-02-01 05:52:50 +0000 UTC]

Sometimes I think the software companies are just trying to sabotage us... >.> We must be wary. I have a wacom intuos too so maybe it's some weird glitch inherent in them...
I have to steal my mom's laptop to scan XD but it's kind of a pain because I can't really wake her up in the middle of the night just to scan stuff. o.O

oh, definitely. it's probably going to cause the downfall of humanity-- we waste so much time on getting "plug-and-play" to actually plug and play that we're likely dead before we know it. there are all those statistics on how much time we spend during our lives sleeping.. i wonder how much time we spend cursing at computers? though i'm reminded of a wonderful douglas adams quote: "their fundamental design flaws are hidden by their superficial design flaws."

ooh, that's no fun. there are two all-in-one scanner/printer/whatevers in this house (three if you count the one in the garage). one's in my bedroom, and the other's attached to my sister's computer. however, the one on my sister's computer is currently flashing every single light very rapidly. and windows keeps popping up this lovely little "failed to recognize usb device" message (which i DON'T UNDERSTAND since it's been plugged in to that same port for MONTHS). so i think it just underwent a spontaneous massive existence failure.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DeadWizard In reply to alaisiaga [2009-02-03 04:07:55 +0000 UTC]

O.O That essentially what happened to mine, minus the flashing lights. It's like some sort of electronic apoptosis...

And I would like to see graphs for computer cursing vs sleeping XD I still dream of a paradise where when you plug in a device and run the set-up software, it actually does what it's supposed to without you having to fanangle it into behaving.

Speaking of Douglas Adams.... My sister reminded me of a great quote from him:
"In the begining, the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and has largely been regarded as a bad move."
His satire is incredible..ly random.

alaisiaga In reply to DeadWizard [2009-02-03 23:16:14 +0000 UTC]

maybe it was supposed to be a printer revolution.. but the drivers were caught unprepared.

lol! maybe someday... someday.. *gets faraway look in eyes*

douglas adams is a master of satire. and in Hitchhiker's, for example, there's so many random side stories that you think, "oh, this can't possibly have anything to do with anything". and sometimes it doesn't, but occasionally it turns into some huge plot point. i love it.
