travail. Je serai ravie de les lire !

English:

Here is my drawing for Hicali's contest which theme was yôkai.
[link]

Yôkai is the name of monsters and creatures of Japanese
tradition. And all that is called ghosts and evil spirits is named
yûrei.

Yôkai is written with the kânji "monster", "demon" or "sorcerer"
and also "strange". They may also be called mononoke, which
means "strange".

Yôkai often have animal characteristics, such as the kappa [link]
which looks like a turtle, but they can also have a human
appearance, or can even be inanimate or intangible.

Yôkai have mostly magical powers and are not allies of Men. They
play their tricks, ranging from simple petty crimes to serious and
violent havoc. To meet a yôkai is generally not a good sign.

Yôkai evolve in every kind of environments, forest, mountain, river.
Some yôkai haunt humans and bring evil upon some families while
others are content just to live with them. Their simple company is
enough for them and they love spying and eavesdropping.

The three yôkai I represented are the three main shapeshifters
animals of Japanese tradition and folklore. There is the Bakeneko
(the cat on the tree on the left), the Inugami (the dog with the
orange kimono) and the Kitsune (the white fox on the right with
the umbrella).

These shapeshifters animals are not aggressive and are just looking
for human companionship. They like to be in their presence and revel
in their gossip and their misery.

I hope you'll enjoyed my artwork and this little description. Don't
hesitate to let me know what you think about it ! I'll be very happy
to read your comments and opinions.

This looks somehow so dreamy like if it would be an illusion only not a real thing to grab.
I love the colours this soft summer night atmosphere a lot and hope you get some place with this work since it is really very beautiful! )

I'm very happy to read such a comment about this illustration. Some people did not understand it at all and the organizer of the contest said really mean things about it and hurt me a lot. (read the talk between Yuni and I and you will understand) so this makes me very happy you appreciated this illustration. And to put it in a nutshell, I had a very bad place in the ranking because the organizer "did not like my style"...

They're so cute and peaceful for yokai ^.^ I really love their fashion style, it's lovely, I only hope the evening isn't too cold for them but maybe the weather is always warm where they are ^-^ The lamp coming out of the cloud is such a nice detail that makes them look even more strange X3

I love them all very much but Bakeneko specially, but then...you of course know the reason why I have such a weakness for felines ^.^'' I also find it very interesting that you drew Kitsune to look somewhat more mature and older, I think it suits their character because I've heard that Kitsune are used to live for thousands of years and they're some of the very oldest spirits! But because they can change the shape to their own liking, they can masquerade even as a 15 years old for example, but would still have a thousands years old personality, so to speak. And I love Inugami because he's so tiny and adorable, I hope he won't bite people calling him tiny ^.^;;

Aldric-Cheylan In reply to Yuni [2012-09-16 23:15:56 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much for your sweet words about this illustration Yuni ! It's been a while I did not do a full drawing with such a background. I'm glad how it turned and I'm very happy to know you enjoyed it ! :3

I loved so much creating designs for these three yôkai ! It was so much fun ! ^-^ I love to draw kimonos and I learned lots of things about yôkai thanks to this contest. I'll have the results tomorrow normally. I'll let you know the ranking. :3 But honestly, I do contests only because I find the themes interesting, and don't really read what would be the prices. My friends sometimes ask me "what are the prices ??" and I just reply "I don't know I did not even read them !" X) Of course it is always pleasant to win but if I don't win I don't really care. I do it only because I had an idea the moment I read the theme and rules.

I'm really happy you liked the Bakeneko ! ^-^ And sure, I know why you have such a weakness for felines. He he ! X3 But... oh well, I can't really say anything because I'm a bit (a lot) like that too after all. ^,^
I'm very happy you liked the fact I drew the Kitsune older and more mature. I read that Kitsune are more elegant and adult than other shapeshifters animals, that's why I drew him like this. And I drew the Inugami like this because to me he is supposed to be loved by people and to be cute, so he can easily spy people around him. About the Bakeneko, I drew him on the tree because to spy people he often climbs in trees and rests on branches. Well, that's according to my own imaginary and the things I saw and heard in Oboro Muramasa and read on the net. ^.^
I like the Inugami too because he is so tiny compared to the two other yôkai. ^-^ I was happy I could draw him so small. That makes him cute I think. And I hope he won't bite me for calling him cute. ^,^ But I'm sure no because these yôkai are not aggressive nor violent towards humans.

Ooh, I'm glad you liked this detail of the lamp coming out of the flowers. Because yes, the pink cloud is in fact lots of flowers together. But I'm glad you thought it was a cloud, that means my attempt at making the background strange, in relation to the theme and description, was a success ! ^-^ I tried to make a sort of strange background that would not seem real to humans. It is like the heart and sky were melting to make one. The clouds would be like the flowers of the tree and the flowers would make think of the clouds, or would make think of candy floss ! ^-^

You're very welcome and thank you for drawing and posting it! ^-^ I can't believe that someone said mean things about this illustration, but that made me like this illustration even more now!

I think it's good that you participated in this contest because it was a pleasure to read about the things you've learned about the yokai, and I like the character designs you created ^-^ Personally I've watched several series about the yokai that I'd recommend to everyone: Inuyasha, Mushishi, Mononoke, Natsume Yuujinchou, Amatsuki, Onimyoji (it's not anime but a very atmospheric and interesting film, I think ^^) and now I'm watching Nurarihyon no Mago but I can't recommend it yet because I've only watched 1 episode. And Spirited Away, of course. It's a very interesting Japanese culture theme aside from the ninja and samurai themes. It's even so much older and more varied, and connected also with the rest of the world's beliefs of ghosts, spirits and monsters. In fact, they're present in every single culture, I believe.

Yes I have my secret fantasies about Bakeneko, but that's just me ^.^ I'm sure you have the same fantasies, though XD Maybe it's because Kitsune looks like a calm and relaxed geisha, Inugami looks like a little servant boy who'd bring sake to important persons while overhearing their secrets, while Bakeneko looks totally like a ninja to me X3 It must be the pose and that he's sitting on a tree. He'd make a perfect shinobi I think ^.^ But yes I just love his face and hair you drew, he is so cute and reminds me of Naos whom I miss so much ^_^ Of course what Naos loves to do wouldn't be accepted in this contest and wouldn't be good for this particular drawing either, but when I look at Bakeneko I think it doesn't hurt to dream~ XD

Aldric-Cheylan In reply to Yuni [2012-09-18 22:35:37 +0000 UTC]

Well, the person who organized the contest said "I don't like the style", so just because of that I was the penultimate in the ranking and my good friend DreamIsNotLife was the last just because the person who organized said "there are not yôkais", while they were... But in fact this person just did this contest about yôkai from what she learnt only in some mangas. However, that's not how it should work. But, oh well, idiots are idiots and nobody can change their stupidity.

Anyway, it really makes me very happy to know you enjoy this drawing even more now ! ^-^ Thank you so much ! :3 I was really sad when this girl said my drawing was ugly but one of my friends told me "you know what your drawing really worth, so don't pay attention to what dumb people can say", and I agree with that. I share my art with people who can understand it and who can love it. I know my style is particular and does not please to everybody, and fortunately. Everybody has his own preferences and I don't share my art with people who don't like it but only with my friends and people who can appreciate it the way it is. And I'm very happy you like my art that much ! It really means a lot ! <3

I always loved to participate to that kind of contest that have interesting themes, except I never fell on such a stupid organizer. -.- Otherwise it is always very interesting to learn things about themes I don't really know much about. I have to document about the theme asked and I love to learn new things from interesting themes. That's really pleasant.

Ha ha ! ^-^ no, Naos' likes would not be accepted, that's for sure. X3 But oh well, we have our dreams and fantasies, and as you said, it doesn't hurt to dream. ^-^

I watched some episodes of Inuyasha, watched several times Mononoke Hime and Chihiro no Kamikakushi (I love so much this movie) but never watched the other films and series you mentioned. I may have a look at these then. I'm sure they are interesting to look at. Thanks for giving me the names of the series and films you enjoyed. :3

Well, at least, as you said, you've learned something from this contest and you also drew a picture about some new theme that you liked. So personally I don't care about this contest and its organizer, I think your character designs here are very good. But maybe the organizer wanted to see only monsters? I don't know, like I was saying I watched many anime series and yokais have a lot of forms. Those closer to people would have more human-like forms I think, but I guess some monsters in teh background would please the organizer more.

Mononoke Hime is a movie from Hayao Mizayaki, while Mononoke is a TV series about the medicine seller Kusuriuri: [link] and it's the weirdest anime I've ever seen XD And this is a funny picture you will recognize: [link] hehe :> And other series are also good but will take probably a lot of time to watch them all ^.^;;

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Aldric-Cheylan In reply to Yuni [2012-09-19 12:17:20 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I've learned things I did not know and was glad to learn them. I thank you very much for your kind and warm words Yuni ! This really makes me very happy !

Well you know, the drawing that won the contest was this one: [link] (no monsters at all and looks like most participants did) Here is the ranking: [link]
So the organizer gave me a bad rank because she just did not like my style, that's all. There is nothing else to understand. In a nutshell, this contest was not a contest and the point of view was clearly not objective.

Anyway, I'll see if I have time to have a look at these series you mentioned, but I'm not sure I will have enough time to do it... T.T
