Description The sunset last night was to say the least immense. Beautiful golden light followed by a pink sky after sunset.

I had actually spent the whole day shooting at Wistmans Wood and I was very tired but decided it was best to skip dinner and cycle and hike up to a couple of tors an 40 mins or so away. I am so glad I did, soon the adrenaline made me forget how tired I was!

This pool was quite unusual, right near the top of Roos Tor and yet worn as if a watercourse had passed over it. I played with the polariser trying to decide if it was best with or without reflections, eventually deciding to remove them.

Stunning image. I love the contrast between the crisp stones and the soft light in the background.

This spot would make for a beautiful place of internal contemplation. The rock structures are reminiscent of Zen pictures... but wow! definitely worth skipping dinner for. perhaps if the sky was burned just a little bit, it might make for a more striking atmosphere?

Alex37 In reply to chaos-magess [2008-08-25 12:19:57 +0000 UTC]

yes that would undoubtedly make a more dramatic atmosphere, but I also think it would be a false generated atmosphere and that isnt something I am willing to create. THanks

curious, did you take one with the reflection as well?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Alex37 In reply to kkart [2008-07-02 16:25:38 +0000 UTC]

yes, but I have deleted it. The fact is this, if I left the reflection in, the foreground exposure is sufficiently bright that the reflection would have been absolute white. The reflection would be way lighter than the sky, that would look wrong

ahhhhhhhhhhhhh ok I got ya, I was wondering if it was maybe the color of the sunlight

Alex37 In reply to kkart [2008-07-02 16:31:35 +0000 UTC]

no, I know other photogrpahers do have reflections that are brighter than the sky the reflect, but to me that just looks immediately unrealistic, so I avoid it.

Wonderful light. Like the composition a lot too. I'd like to see a shot with replections for comparisons sake.

Alex37 In reply to tobyedwards [2008-06-30 21:55:36 +0000 UTC]

I have deleted them unfortunately but the blend would have been impossible I think without the reflection ebing brighter than the sky, which I hate

Cool, that horizon is very familiar to me, I often go walking across the trig-point above Ashburton. Although I really need to get up on Dartmoor more. . .

Very much worth the effort... must have been some bike ride after that long day!

The only thing is, for some time I didn't think there was any water in them... until I read Orca's comment and realised there just wasn't a reflection.

Personal preference I guess

Nonetheless, very worthwhile.

yeah, I have now deleted the reflection exposures, but I made the right decision (according to me )

Thanks

Alex37 In reply to sassaputzin [2008-06-30 19:27:41 +0000 UTC]

what are your opinions then Steve? and also, did you get out for the sunset last night?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

sassaputzin In reply to Alex37 [2008-07-01 09:23:32 +0000 UTC]

honestly.....i dont like it.....when i first clicked on it i was surpirsed you'd deemed it worthy.

I find the foreground to 'heavy' or there is too much of it....to weighted. i mean the composition is good and probably the best you could have managed, but im just not lead into the image.

And i cant make out the water so maybe you made the wrong decision to remove the reflections

And if it was such an amazing sunset where is it ... sorry Alex but this doesnt work for me...

Alex37 In reply to sassaputzin [2008-07-01 09:35:53 +0000 UTC]

see the next shot....

Thats okay Steve, and no need to apologise. You dont need to like every shot I take, but if you dont like it it is more valuable if you comment I really do love this shot so in a way I find it strange that you dont like it, but I accept your criticism.

Great shot, great composition. Even the haze fits the image.

I can't see any reflections or any water, you should have left the reflections IMO.... The pool has that unfortunate sloping upwards look to it due to the wide angle lens pointing downwards. I often find this a problem where water is concerned and usually try to lower the camera and lift the angle as much as I can...

Neither of these factors ruins the image for me. Good work.

Alex37 In reply to JakeSpain [2008-06-30 10:24:31 +0000 UTC]

The problem was, with the reflections the pool was like a beacon of light! One of my pet hates is a reflection of water which is clearly brighter than the sky, so I tend to avoid those situations. Thanks
