Info
The final result of tens of hours of work for my final project for school. The project consists of two parts, the first of which was to write a 40 page document on the Basics of Computer Graphics. This is the second part, which was a practice task to manipulate and remake a famous painting or drawing. As one can easily see I have chosen Salvador Dali's The Elephants as the base painting I worked on. I actually stumbled upon it quite accidentally and I was immediately enchanted by it.

After I chose the painting I had to think of how to manipulate it, how to change it, what exactly to keep, remove and incorporate in it. The day I found the painting I also learned that a girl had made a Monkey Island board game and that made me very happy, since I am a big fan of the Monkey Island games. That was also the moment that I decided that it's about time I give a tribute to them, so I decided to blend Salvador Dali and Monkey Island. Crazy, huh?

I'm very happy with the final result as I believe that I was able to keep the surrealism of Dali, while in the same time blending it with the atmosphere of the Monkey Island games. Hopefully the fans will like it!

I think this piece is amazing (although some people may not quite understand it if they are not familiar with Dali) I love the mysterious-ness and the fact that the whole of the Monkey Island series anyway could be (opinions of some fans only) a whole dream/alternate reality with the voodoo and all that. Anyway I think the colours are amazing, especially the use of yellow and navy/midnight blues and I like the way the elephants tower over the island and are part of the skyscape and moon, as opposed to in the landscape. It's like they are are part if the night, part of the dream. I also think the art has great depth to it, created by the smokey cloud at the back behind the island itself and the use of fading of the mountains at the back. It's not clear in your description thou; did you use a screen shot of the game for the island part of the picture? Also I am a big Dali and Moneky Island fan and I think this would appeal to fans of the latter and although intriguing it may seem disjointed to people who didn't follow those topics.

Woa, thanks for the detailed comment! I'm incredibly happy when another person manages to capture the emotion and message of my art in such an exact way. It seems that we are on the exact same opinion on what is The Secret of Monkey Island, as I also believe that the most plausible theory is that everything is just a dream, created by the vivid imagination of Guybrush Threepwood himself, who in real life may as well be a little kid.

That is the reason I made this, at first strange, combination of Monkey Island and Dali's art. As for me they share many similarities. To answer your question, I used a screenshot of the game only as a reference. Everything you see on that picture was drawn on me. Even if I wanted I couldn't use a screenshot, because all of the shots of the island have the big Monkey Island logo on them, so they are no good.

Once again, thanks for the comment! It really means a lot!

To me this looks like completely two different pictures. First one of the Monkey Island (I love the game too ) the second - a surreal picture of two strange elephants not in any way connected with the first one. As if Your gazing at the picture of the island from another picture (the bottom part) with two elephants. I don't really understand that. Maybe that was your main goal, but I don't really like the concept. That's just my opinion However if I look at each one individually I have to say that you did a good job: The island looks fantastic, it has all that mystery and strange, cartoonlike humorous atmosphere in it. The moon with it's sight looking down at a dark island at night which is promising lots of adventure and interesting mysteries, this all has arisen sweet nostalgia in me the surrealistic part is unknown to me as I don't know both the genre nor what is its role in this picture; cause, you know, elephants and pirates?

Oh, as a grade? Well, results haven't been announced yet, but to be honest I'm not hoping for much mostly because the teacher's thinking and perception of art is way too outdated, and he has a hard time accepting digital art.

Beautiful and creepy masterpiece of surrealism. I saw the thumb and immediately thought, " Wow, someone played with Dali's elephants! I have to look!" This whole piece is amazing, I love how you have blended two different atmosphere's to create a new world.

Thank you so much for the comment and all those flattering words. Strange thing is that today, when I was looking again at the piece, I realized that there is a much deeper meaning and message in it than what I initially planned to include. I guess that this is just how Dali works on the mind - you start to create something and in the process intuitively and unexplainably you add more and more to it.

Why thank you for the kind words and yes there is a creepy face in the moon. It is actually the face of the evil ghost pirate LeChuck!
