Description
I learned to paint simply by looking. If your wondering what happens in my head on each of the panels. Nothing ! I'm listening to my music. I hear this a lot from one of my favorite artists who say "When you paint, let go everything you know about painting". It took me a while to fully understand what they meant."Blind energy" is a good thing. When one begins to paint, everything you know should disappear and the emotional side should take over." Jeanean Songco Martin
I really didn't feel like covering my process with useless information to make this a proper tutorial. It's not what goes on inside my head. I simply paint what I see, not what I know.
Guidelines, ideal proportions and premade compositions that they teach us in our art school they become more a distraction for an artist. If you can let that go maybe this tutorial might not be so useless after all
Oil on canvas, 30" by 24"
Took me 3 days.
If you have any questions let me know I'll be happy to explain.

I love the painting so much , it is so beautiful and I think one of my favorite parts of it are the trees in the background, haha. You have painted them so flawlessly!
And I would have to agree with everything you said, I have problems with letting go what I know and just learning how to paint, but it is so hard. And I can feel the struggle whenever I try. Once I tried to learn how to draw technical things, I have lost my ability to draw what I see and go with the flow... hopefully I haven't lost the ability, I hope I just misplaced it :/

If deviant art has taught me anything, it's that there are an infinite number of ways to skin a cat. Maybe even that no two cat skinnings are alike. But aside from skinning cats, which I don't know why anyone should do that, thanks for the painting tutorial.

I aspire to paint/draw like you one day. Just...wow.
I've been meaning to ask: Have you ever painted with acrylics? And if so, is it easy to make the switch from acrylics to oils? I've been wanting to try oils for the longest time but I just can't bring myself to do it.

Yes I used to paint with acrylics. I think for me when I started to use oils I lost my likeness for acrylics big time. I think of acrylics more for finger painting now. The colours are too harsh and too plastic to me. Making skin tones can be hard with acrylics while with oils there are much more natural tones. I think if its hard for u to transition to oils then you should not force your self. You can still paint with acrylic and make it look like its oil, as you grow you kinda find your fav and best materials to work with. Just have to try everything.

Yeah I can see what you mean about it being hard to make skin tones and its plastic quality. I'm going give oils a try
Thank you!

So pretty. I love how you layered the colors, kind of. I do the same thing, but in a slightly different way (obviously). I get what you mean about letting go of everything. I don't think I necessarily do that with the actual painting (I think a little, but I suppose not much), but when it comes to making the colors I feel like a little kid. :3 I'm just like, I'll add some of this and some of that until I get the color I want. XD Then I get asked how I made it and I have no idea. xD That's a downside. But on the bright side, I can make colors really quickly. I just love your technique though. <33

The colors look so frail! Wouldn't expect these colors from oils. Usually colors like this make me think of watercolors. I love it

You are extremely talented!
I was just wondering, do you draw a basic sketch before you start painting, or do you start painting straight away?

alifann In reply to In-The-Distance [2011-01-11 03:50:01 +0000 UTC]
Depends what I paint and how complicated. Sometimes I think drawing is a waste of time and I can easly sketch it with some raw sienna. But sometimes when a body or something detailed is hard I do a light sketch. Too much pencil just smudges during painting so I try to avoid

I agree with you 110% I feel like all the crap I ever learned in college makes me hesitant to go with what I feel because there's that fear of making a technical error or going against what the books explain as the "right" way to do it. There's no right and wrong with art, just raw emotion, what the artist felt is what they did, I'm glad someone who creates such beautiful work feels the same way!

I havent finished my univ and I already feel bad for all the money i spent on it. I could have went out and started to sell work already. Did you guys have like a program or a course for Art Business. Like how to get started and how to promote your self and your art. We don't know a word of it and neither do our profs. Kinda sad what we really need is not given.

Me neither, I hear ya art school is ridiculous! I'm just astonished at all the supplies I've had to buy that were "required" for certain courses yet we never once wound up using them in class. I literally have like ten unopened packages of gouache, graphite pencils, newsprint, sketch pad, watercolor paper, etc. I tried to return them to the bookstore and they wouldn't even let me!!! >.< and come to think of it, no we haven't had any marketing classes like that! D:

I totally feel the same way when i paint, i've never heard the term "blind energy" but that's a great way to put it. That's what it feels like... the energy coursing through your body and right onto the canvas- it's focused but you don't have to think about it to do that

As much as I would love to have a live model in front of me, instead I have a computer and a photo. Maybe in the future when I have the money I can pay the model to stay for hours.
