Description
I learned to paint simply by looking. If your wondering what happens in my head on each of the panels. Nothing ! I'm listening to my music. I hear this a lot from one of my favorite artists who say "When you paint, let go everything you know about painting". It took me a while to fully understand what they meant."Blind energy" is a good thing. When one begins to paint, everything you know should disappear and the emotional side should take over." Jeanean Songco Martin
I really didn't feel like covering my process with useless information to make this a proper tutorial. It's not what goes on inside my head. I simply paint what I see, not what I know.
Guidelines, ideal proportions and premade compositions that they teach us in our art school they become more a distraction for an artist. If you can let that go maybe this tutorial might not be so useless after all
Oil on canvas, 30" by 24"
Took me 3 days.
If you have any questions let me know I'll be happy to explain.

i really like the background. i'm always afraid to try it for fear of muddying everything up. but this is like really good! did you let everything dry before adding a new layer?

Most people tell me I have very muddy colours. But in fact those are my fav colours. The most complex and hard to recreate with paint are my favorite.
In the art world the term "muddy" means its a wrong temperature.
I usually paint wet on wet. I don't wait for oils to dry and I really don't need to, it doesn't bother me.

oh i guess i was using 'muddy' as in the colors get totally mixed together and it ends up being a mess on the canvas. i love working wet on wet when it comes to water color or digital oil paint. but like anything it just takes practice and a slight degree of talent =]
i love your work you are a very talented artist.

I really like the way you paint if it's watercolour, because I like the white in it.
It feels more a live at this way, I always painted with watercolours so it was a struggel to paint with oils,
I didn't now that you could paint like that with oils when I first started. ( sorry for my spelling)
Thank you for sharing with us!

Do you ever use just straight oil paints, no mixing in additives?

Yahh definitely I used a lot of white in this piece, and a lot of grey to cool down the colours. I was reading this book and it said "the coolest colour in your pallet is white !" Interesting. Since then I look at white in a different way.

This almost looks like watercolor, at least during the first couple in-progress photos. What kind of painting medium do you use? I have tried several mixes with oil and mineral spirits, and have used glakid, and liquin, and just plain oil...but I am still up for tips on that front!

I use a mixture of Mineral Spirits with Stand Oil. The mineral spirits I think is the reason why its looking so watercolour-ish. Because it basically breaks down oils in to a liquid form.

Yahh something like that, I just eye ball it. Medium is only medium it wont really effect someones skill. But the correct medium for the right person can make things better. Some people like to add Damar Varnish but when ever I paint with damar its kinda feels like painting with honey .. kinda gross feeling.

Yes I know, I just read that the 3:1 ratio was best from a book I have. Was curious what you used. It doesn't effect skill much but it can alter the integrity of the actual painting later on. I think it is an important part of oil painting.

Wow! It's a very different process from the one I use definitely. I block in all the base colors of the entire thing and then work my way into detailing and adding shadown and finally light. Isn't it difficult to mantain the same colors this way? or do you just mix a lot? So the background that's white it's actually the canvas?

alifann In reply to twinkletinker [2011-01-10 16:38:28 +0000 UTC]
Yes the white is the canvas. I try to leave as much as possible because I'm not really a fan of completely covered paintings.
I think my painting process changes depending on my reference. Sometimes I would do a back wash or I'll also block in the whole area with orange and go on top with blues. If you paint realistically section by section its actually really easy to spot any problems or in-proportions.

I had this white canvas discussion with my painting teacher and he said he likes to cover everything up because he thinks an unconvered canvas gives a sense of unfinished. I disagreed but there was no way to change his mind so I dropped the subject
I know that feeling... my painting process in digital varies greatly from one to another. But it does sound interesting to paint section by section. I'll have to give it a shot!

But everyone has their own way of painting. I paint different every single time. Maybe later when I start another piece I'll try something different. Like I can't wait to try the bubble effect.

The bubble effect?

Look in my list of fav items. There is this tutorial that uses bubbles. I can't wait to start making huge bubbles and put them on my canvas and then pop them, leaving a mark. I think that would be so much fun. In my head I'm already have an idea for a painting but watch the technique will not work for me and I'll just get upset lol.
