uh. that is a contradictory statement.
Art is created by people therefore the people creating it want to send out a certain message or beauty to the world. If you don't understand human beings and their emotions you don't understand the background of why the artwork was created. You therefore fail as an artist because if nobody feels and connects with your artwork it won't be popular. Judging by your popularity I'd say you understand a lot of people.

I'm not sure how one can understand art without understanding people. Certainly there are works that require no introduction, no explanation of the artists behind them, but all art is inextricably human; Otherwise, art becomes limited to the most shallow and visceral of things. At that point, why make art? Why look at it, or listen to it, or feel it if you can't take anything emotional or ideological from it?

Feels like this read my mind xD people, and how to deal with them and understand them, is something I just don't get a lot of the time. Art is so much easier (and much more fun) to understand.

I think this stamp is a fallacy right off the first read. You can't "understand" art, you can only appreciate it.

I think that depends on individual philosophies.
After all, if a person "interprets" meaning, then they do "understand" albeit differently then perhaps it was intended -- but to say that isn't just as worthwhile as the intended idea cannot be proven. An example is this conversation: you think you "understand" this phrase enough to make a comment on it's validity, however your conclusion seems to be very different then the artist who made the statement, and even from mine, a fellow "appreciator." This outlook leads to the questions of, "what is understanding, but experience gained?" and "is it necessary to have the same exact experience (or "understanding") as the artist to connect spiritually to another's ideas?" After all, as people, it is all we can do to relate and try to listen to one another. What it comes down to is that -- at least from an existential view -- people's can only judge based on what they know, and if they feel like they understand, then why does it matter if they don't share the same view as another? It's not very reasonable to undermine a train of thought for no reason.

What I am saying is simply opinion, and nothing more, it is true. The validity of my statement, however, is philosophical at best and I do agree with some of your statements. This issue at hand is obviously semantic, but the use of the word 'understanding' in context with 'art' would't be my first choice. Particularly in the context of comparing understanding a person to understanding art.
The artist at hand has every right to use that word; it is their 'art'. As I have every right to disagree with and criticise the "art work", particularly when it is in the public realm.

If you are an "artist", you can simply appreciate art in different ways. Some art can never be understood except by it's creator. That's the beauty of art.

I'm afraid I'll have to agree to disagree on the semantics. We can never fully share the same perception as the artist, but it is our perception of the art that makes it just that: art.
You can understand how art works, the rule of thirds, balance, ecetera. But I'm not sure I would ever say I have fully "understood" a piece of work. To do so, would to me, seem pretentious at best.
This is, of course, all philosophical. I simply disagree with the statement presented in the stamp.

I agree with what you're saying but all I was trying to point out was that it is possible to understand art. I'm not trying to say everyone can, I'm simply pointing out that I don't think what you're saying is true. Art can be understood. Just because some people can't doesn't mean it's impossible.

I get this. It's hard to understand others, but seeing something that represents them and their story, so one can interpret it themselves... that's meaningful to me. It's not always easy to converse, and art is something I really love and try to understand, because it can leave room for new perspectives and growth.
I just... really love this stamp.
