- Day 31: Haunted -
332 word count

It turned out that fear skewed Niv’s aim enough to land her in one of the places she had visited while in a blind rage during her travels: a muddy lake.

The sun did not penetrate very far beneath the surface here – in fact it looked dark though the waters around her were relatively light so Niv assumed it was evening. She had a feeling that even during the day, sunlight would not have made it past the mud shifting below her. The bottom of the lake was covered in water thyme that either stood straight on its stalks or lay still against the lakebed. Walking between the stalks, partially blurred by the mud, was a solid black esk.

James had seen the blue esk once before. She had come stomping across the surface in the lake much like Seventh had, carrying with her conflicting emotions that had given him whiplash. He did not appreciate her swift trespass into a domain he went out of his way to keep clear of any who could fall into such despair as he was haunted by. Would she again pass through and save him the need to push her out?

Seeing James gave Niv such a sense of dark foreboding that she ceased the undulating that she slipped into when submerged. The feeling from James echoed what she had felt when observing Seventh. She stared at James and he stared at her – and then she winked out of the lake, leaving a vacuum of space that water rushed in to fill. James bowed his head, and returned to wandering the depths.

Niv blinked under the crescent moon within her boundary. She immediately felt about for Scamper and when the other esk answered her call she sent a warm fuzzy feeling accompanied by a vision of how Niv had first seen Scamper.

Welcome home, Scamper said. Did you find the esk?

No. I may go back to search…eventually. For now I think I’ll stay a while.

- END OF NIV'S ESKTOBER TRAVELS STORYLINE -

To those of you I promised I would include in later esktober prompts, please do not feel neglected. I already have sketches of your babies in my Niv's storyline but I wanted to finish the esktober prompts in time. Yours will be out at a later date and I will @ tag you as soon as they are ready. Again, they're sketched and just need to be rendered. Thank you in advance for your patience.

Did you participating in esktober this year? Who did you illustrate?

Haha, looks like people beat me to saying this, but I love the description of the water rushing back into place! Love these little stories so far!

Thank you! I'm glad so many people are commenting on that - it resonates that I must have done a pretty good job with the physics of it!

Thank you! I loved doing the tyme leaves.

Thank you! I figured if esk can suddenly zap out of a place physics demands a shift of the matter where they used to be.

That would make for a devastating weapon if a large enough item was removed from the water all at once.

It would! There are in fact some colossal esk who have some storm enchantments that affect the real world in the TWWM universe. I imagine tsunamis and crazy hurricanes being set off......which gives me an idea. Conversations with you are so inspirational xD

It looks great, I love how the mud partly obscures James and the way Niv is just hanging there in the water, looking at him. I also liked this description - and then she winked out of the lake, leaving a vacuum of space that water rushed in to fill.

Eeee you flatter me.   Thank you so much for taking the time to look at and read these! I've definitely loved doing them alongside other esktober participants like yourself who persevered! This definitely won't be the last story of Niv out and about~
