Description
I’m back! And during Mermay too! I’ve decided to continue doing marine creatures for Mermay, and I was planning on drawing actual mermaids for the month. I swiftly realized that I am quite bad at drawing people, and I’d rather not post my terrible practice here. So instead I thought of a different idea. Mermaids are half-humanoid, and half-marine creature (usually fish). So what if I mixed something else with marine creatures? Something I’m good at drawing... and than it hit me, Water Dragons! Note: These won’t only be combinations of one marine creature+dragon, as the term “dragon” can really mean anything. Instead I’m drawing dragons that take aspects from or resemble real life marine animals
lets Dive in (Heheh)
Aeyrgray Merrow
Aquascutum dracocantus
Aeyrgray Merrow are a species of Merrow native to the Aeyr-Grey Isles of northern Zebashe, as well as the surrounding waters. This species being notable for it’s long, teal crests, which are attached to their brow.
Merrow are a group of fully aquatic dragons that are believed to have descended from Amphitheres. The long wings of the Amphithere morphing into the Ray-like fins of the Merrow.
Almost all species of Merrow are highly social (with a few exceptions) creatures, usually living in groups of 3-6 (A group of Merrow is called a Band). In ancient times Merrow were believed to be some form of Merfolk Siren, calling boats to their doom. This stems from the tendency of Merrow to prop themselves up on rocks just above the water and “sing”. No one knows exactly who Merrow do this, however it seems to be pleasurable. Merrow somehow developed the ability to alter their voice frequency to an absurd degree, much further than humans. They can quietly chirp or hum, or they can screech at a frequency loud enough to shatter crystal. They often use their voice to immobilize both foes and prey.
When breeding season commences, male Merrow will prop themselves up on rocks to sing loud songs for females. These songs can be heard from several kilometres away, especially underwater. Females will mate with one male every three years, choosing the male who sings the loudest (A loud voice assists in calling from far away, but also hunting and protecting themselves). After mating the female with crawl onto the beach to lay their eggs, before returning to the sea.
Hope you enjoyed!
Zebashe, the Aeyr-Grey Isles, and the Merrow dragons belong to me
