Moriarty is in love with Mrs. Hudson (desperately) and she with him (desperately), but he distances himself from her constantly (as in the episode "Mrs. Hudson is Taken Hostage," where she asks if they can meet again and he turns her down), because he fears that he will be insufficient, even harmful, to her should he expose all of himself to her--because parts of himself are very evil. This is half the premise of my fanfic "His Ardor," the other half being a romance of similar complexity between Sherlock Holmes and Irene Adler, in which he is afraid of risking the pain of losing his first true love (Elizabeth Hardy, who died saving him) yet again in the arms of another woman. Poor babies... *sniff*

This image is meant to express Moriarty's paradoxical situation. He is determined not to hurt Mrs. Hudson--for her sake, he would prefer to endure life in loneliness, and yet nothing he could ever do with her hurts her as much as not accepting her affections. So the rain drenching him symbolizes her sorrow (her tears) drowning him--and his feeling of ineptitude to give her happiness. If only he'd just admit that he loves her back! *sob*

I disown the idea that "a good enough woman can transform an evil man into a good one." It subordinating and cruel to a woman to ask her to change someone. We are the only people who can change ourselves. So I believe that "A man who has been tarnished but has goodness somewhere deep inside HIM will struggle and force himself to change for the better, because of his love for a good woman"--crucially, HE must be good enough to RECOGNIZE that SHE is good enough to change and grow for. And that's what is happening, we hope, with Mori and Mrs. H.
