Description Okay, so this isn't a tutorial, precisely, but I wanted people to have an idea of how I draw. I always think that's one of the most interesting things to learn about an artist.

Sorry in advance for typos! I wrote this with too much caffeine in my system, in the hours past midnight when the filters come off and the honesty comes out. I'm a little brutal, so sorry for that last step, there. Drawing just takes a lot out of me.

Oh, also, I feel it important to note that I do know how to draw freestyle. Among many others see: [link] I personally don't see anything wrong with using the grid method, especially when your drawings are larger-than-life, and for personal use, but I've been attacked before.

Thanks for looking!

I do everything freehand, maybe that's why I suck. xD

Nah, that's how I started out as well, and I still freehand smaller drawings. But with larger-than-life drawings it's really easy to mess up, the grid just makes things simpler.

Nothing wrong with the grid method. I think everyone should draw the way they want to. Afterall, art isn't about rules.

Whenever I start drawing people, I usually print their pictures, turn them backwards, line the important parts, and transfer all those lines to another paper. It's like copying, but actually I'm only getting the size of the face right, and the position of the lips, eyes and cheeks. All the shading and hair and clothes and whatever are up to me.

So, whatever technique is fine, and you do an amazing job!

Interesting method...I do the same thing with the grid, since I draw large it's mainly just to help me get the proportions right.

Thank you so much!

Haha, I realized that this is almost exactly the process I use.

But yeah I don't like using a grid either. Even when I'm drawing a HUGE picture, I don't use the grid, cause it throws me off even more for some reason. Plus, sometimes the lines for the grid don't erase all the way D:

Amelia-Beth In reply to katieonthecoast [2009-07-21 00:18:46 +0000 UTC]

I know what exactly what you mean--that's why, when I use a grid, I use a light board. The grid shows through, and there are no messy lines to erase. I have laziness down to an art.

Wonderful! You are a horrible artist?
Dear Lord, that makes everyone else stupidly incompetent... and myself, off-the-chart down right terrible!
I love Steve Rushton. I loved him from his Son of Dork days though. Such a cute band. Lyrically, not too Disney-proof, but hey.

Amelia-Beth In reply to sweety-wrappers [2009-07-21 00:21:45 +0000 UTC]

Haha, drawing takes it out of me.

I love it when other people know of the people I think no one knows about. And...wow that was confusing. But, yeah, Son of Dork was great, and he's not too bad on his own, either. It'll be interesting to see where he goes from there.

You definitely should! I think it's always great to try a bunch of different methods...I still haven't quiet settled on one.

CezLeo In reply to Amelia-Beth [2009-07-21 14:27:47 +0000 UTC]

Do you find that method more reliable?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Amelia-Beth In reply to CezLeo [2009-07-26 04:27:22 +0000 UTC]

It's not always more reliable, especially on smaller drawings, but it works very well for larger ones.

Great work!! It's awesome to see how you draw!
I think it will be very helpful to a lot of people!

P.S. A horrible artist?? You have a great, great talent! You are absolutely amazing!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Amelia-Beth In reply to HerEvilGothMajesty [2009-07-21 00:40:20 +0000 UTC]

It's not so much that I think I'm a terrible artist, but the drawing process itself is draining, and if the final product deviates from what I thought it would be...well, I guess my ego takes a blow. Guess that's kind of part of improving, though, huh?

Anyway, thanks so much! Kind words from you mean the world.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

HerEvilGothMajesty In reply to Amelia-Beth [2009-07-21 06:26:01 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I know what you mean. When I'm drawing everything looks ok, but when it's finished I just don't like it anymore.

Yes, it is a big part of it I think.
I think that when you're not critical to your work it's just very hard to improve.
So it's a good thing!

You are very welcome!

What exactly is "graphitone?"

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Amelia-Beth In reply to jitterbuglove [2009-07-21 00:24:36 +0000 UTC]

It's basically a dark pencil stick that you can mix with water. I like using it just as a pencil, though, because it's very dark, perfect for drawing things like pupils. You should try them out, they're quite fun to experiment with.
