Description
This started out as a sketch to get in the mood for commissions, and then I went slightly overboard. >_>;;; though omg katara's leg is too long oopsieANYWHO. Just rewatched ATLA. I'd only seen it the once, so it was fun to watch again.
I never understood all the hate towards Katara. Personally, I think she's a little badass. Not as much of a BA as Toph, BUTSTILL
I didn't have any references handy, so I went with Katara's fire nation disguise (kind of) and uh made up Toph's outfit. >>;

I think people disliked her because at first, they saw her as a Mary Sue. I also think her nature can get on a lot of people's nerves. I can identify with katara the most though, because I'm very much like her. I'm very passionate about the things I believe in, I try to help others whenever I can, and I tend to get into other people's business because I want to help. X3 But she is a badass. The Puppetmaster is still one of my favorite episodes from Book 3

The Mary Sue argument seemed weird to me since the creators are both men, but then, I've noticed a lot of people are quick to jump in with the Sue accusation if a female character is at all interesting and badass. :\

I agree with you actually. It's that whole double standard crap again. Girls are still not seen as strong, independent and bad ass enough, so when people see them looking bad ass and awesome, they MUST be a Mary Sue XP
I actually think that's one thing that's so great about this show. It has SO MANY BAD ASS GIRLS. As good guys AND bad guys!
As for her not using bloodbending, I think it was a personal moral/principle on Katara's part. It was part of her personality. She chose not to use it because of how invasive and inherently dangerous, even evil, bloodbending could be. I think it would have been cool to see her use it, but also, it's a technique you can only use during a full moon.

You know, I think another huge factor is love interest-- esp if it's a guy that fangirls, well, fangirl over (batshit insane Zutara fans, anyone?). Toph is much more independent, tough, and snide, yet pretty much everyone adores her. And she doesn't have a guy in the show. HMMM.

Yeah, I think you're right. Everyone was SO ANGRY that the two of them didn't end up together (Zuko and Katara). While I admit the idea of them together was appealing, realistically they wouldn't have worked. Katara would have eventually killed Zuko XD

I thought her attitude was pretty realistic for her age, and the fact that she had faults (as did all of them) was cool. Plus Zuko had his "omgI'M SO EMO" annoying bursts, yet he had a gazillion fans XD;;
