Description
"Musth is Tiring"
Mammuthus columbi. An acrylic painting I did recently of big bull Columbian mammoth appearing tired after a rampage he did under the influence of musth.
This was inspired by a documentary I saw called "The Darkside of Elephants", where it covered the human and elephant conflict in India. It showed how violent elephants can be and the potential carnage an angry elephant is capable of (like pulling the limbs off of a person like they were just an insect). They also explored how a bull elephant in musth is one of the most dangerous animals someone could ever encounter.
I based the look of the mammoth on Asian elephants, being their closest living relatives. I did this pretty quickly, just a couple of days after completing my “Tyrannosaur Gape” painting. I started and finished the painting within twenty four hours, scanned and printed a copy of it before mailing the print to the annual Society of Vertebrate Paleontology auction that took place last Friday.
I was surprised at how well some of my prints did at the live and silent auctions, namely the live one. This was the first time my prints were used at the live auction, about fifteen or so being auctioned off as a single collection. They were sold at a winning bid of $750. I really wish I was there to see it in person. Luckily a friend of mine filmed the winning bid and sent me the video.
This is the first Columbian mammoth I’ve ever done.
Completed on the 16th of August 2017.
Done using color pencils and acrylic paint.Related content

When Mammuthus columbi got into musth all hell would break loose as 11 tons of mad elephant rampaged trough the prarie while flipping bison and squashing lions. I would pitty any Clovis people that ended up in it's path.
