"Shade"

Ankylosaurus magniventris, Palaeosaniwa canadensis. An acrylic painting of a young Ankylosaurus resting under some shade under the hot afternoon sun as a Paleosaniwa searches for prey.

This was inspired by a picture I took of a set of trees at a national park here in California (either Muir Woods or some national park in Humboldt County). I liked how the scene looked and imagined am animal resting under the shade the trees provided. I added the Paleosaniwa as I wanted at least one other animal in the composition. I managed to get some helpful input from Jim Kirkland on the hind limb anatomy for the pose. I started the under drawing while camping in Big Sur with my girlfriend, sketching it in the fresh air near the coast.

I am not entirely happy with the foreground plant elements, which is something I am keeping in mind with my upcoming Slenderdactyl painting.

Completed in early January 2019.
