Description
I want to be both good at animu and cartoony art. IS THAT EVEN ALLOWED ;A;Didn't color this because I haven't figured out mommy's color scheme yet. I'm such a terrible brainparent.
Bird mom and bird kid belong to me.

Yup. *points to most recent journal post*
Tablets can magically make lineart go from "OH GOD IT HURTS" to "bluh".

;A; It better be! Both styles are so beautiful... But if you combine them, it looks like crap...

I disagree! hmm...I will have to send some pics that do that very well, though you might classify them as just cartoon? But anime is just an offshoot of cartoons in general.

It'd probably be classified as cartoony then... I classify anime as in general pixiv-quality drawings and anything not following this style as cartoon. Cartoon has tons of styles, too--if you compare, say, *nargyle 's stuff, it looks completely different from Motorcity style, which is also completely different from, say, :alexds1:'s style. But generally speaking cartoony styles focus on flow and anime usually doesn't as much? Although I tend to like the more flowey styled anime drawings more... Bluh, there's really not much separating anime from cartoony, is there

But there are a ton of styles on pixiv as well. I agree that cartoon has many styles so it makes sense to me to classify anime as one of them. I think the biggest difference is that people who like anime tend to different themselves from people who like other styles of cartoons whereas people who like other styles of cartoon don't as much.
This is probably a bad example, but there are definite well-integrated cartoon drawings in Rose of Versailles even though it is deeply rooted in 1980s shojo manga style. Haha, a better example would be Osamu Tezuka's works XD Though it is true that cartoons focus more on flow, but I guess you can argue that's not true for all cartoons.
I think they have forums dedicated to this sort of thing XD But I still think you can be good at anime, cartoon, and anime-cartoon! Like Juby (if you know her?)

That's true... anime is a branch of cartoon, that I agree with. And it's not just people who like anime who differentiate themselves; people who like cartoons/other forms of art do that too, with all the bashing of how anime is a crappy style and isn't art...
Hm, it's true that older anime/manga tend to look more cartoony... Probably because the first anime came from Japanese people reverse-engineering Disney cartoons XD And older manga/anime don't look bad. I guess it's just that the things I like in non-anime cartoons (flow from simplification) and the things I like in anime (delicate details) kind of... don't go together.
;A; I hope so. I don't know Juby. Link please?

That's true that there's a lot of bashing. I just mean there's like the Scott Pilgram kind of cartoon and there's the Disney type of cartoon, but they don't have such distinct fan groups (though they are arguably more similar).
Haha, I love the Rose of Versailles style, but I can't say the same for Saint Seiya >.<
[link] Her art now is mostly anime. But earlier stuff are cartoons (don't know if you can still find it).

And then there's AtLA and Korra, which has managed to gain the love from both sides. Hm. Avatar actually doesn't look bad...! I retract my statement, haha.
Even the older art styles are really different! I rather like how the new(ish) Lupin III season looks. I haven't read Rose of Versailles or Saint Seiya, so I can't really say about those two...
Hm, she only has anime art up now... Her oldest piece that I can find is some FMA chibis. Oh well.

I haven't watched AtLA, Korra, or Avatar (1st episode only), but my impression is that Korra and Avatar feel more anime than cartoon. Sorry, I don't mean to start that whole thing again.
Link? I was freaked out by his pompadour as a child and never watched/read it. Rose of Versailles is very awesome. I don't know if you would like it, but it's like historical drama? Not very romance focused, more about what was going on at the time of the French Revolution and the trials of the new queen Marie Antoinette. I feel like I've seen others, but idk where.

It's like the love child between cartoons and anime. It's got a lot (I do mean a lot) more flow in the animation and art than your regular anime to the point that it resembles Disney, but the style is really anime. I... haven't watched the whole thing of both either (1st episode of Avatar, some way through Korra before the love triangle came along and made me not want to watch it anymore).
This one. There's a lot of naked women if you search or watch this, so be careful. I've only watched the first episode, so I don't know if the series is any good or not. I really like the art style though ;A; And haha, yes, I'm not too fond of the style old Lupin was drawn in... I'll go check out Rose of Versailles then!
Oh well...

I did watch Avatar back in 7th grade, so that would explain why I don't remember the flow. Must check it out one day.
yea, I really like the art style too. The anime seems pretty interesting, but is not as pretty as the poster. Why are there so many naked women and erotic scenes?

.
I think it's partially because the main character (the woman) is known for using her very pretty body to help her steal things, but I think it's mostly fanservice...

oh, I think Shaman King is a good example, though I guess you can argue it's purely anime. Or you can argue that it looks like crap. But I'm in love with it <3

Amorphous-blob In reply to nou-e [2012-09-12 22:29:48 +0000 UTC]
Hm, I feel like Shaman King is more anime... It's probably because of the anime nose. Shaman King does look nice though :>
...Wait. What if the nose the only thing separating anime style from cartoony? I can't think of any cartoony styles off the top of my head that use anime noses extensively...

I feel like the more sequel (Shaman King:Flowers)is more cartoon than the original, but the paneling and backgrounds are definitely manga. Chocolove's nose makes me wonder though XD
Gaah I wanted to name Fairly Odd Parents, but then I remembered Timmy's dad >

THERE'S A SEQUEL????? ...Eh, it still looks pretty anime to me. Probably because of the sharp shading.
Fairly odd parents don't have the anime nose! They have noses that magically connect to the lips. But then again, a lot of anime-ey drawings have non-anime noses as well... Bluh. I think I'm just going stop trying to classify things.

I love her so much. I'd say there's definitely elements of both
Haha, I just thought of fairly odd parents because they had sharp noses (well, some of them)

That's true. What is the rest of the world's criteria for separating anime and not-anime styles anyway? You'd think it'd be easy but then the 100% Japanese One Piece says hello...
